Look Back, which was initially released in Japan earlier this year, has garnered widespread success not only in its home country but also on a global scale. The movie made its debut on more than 100 screens, amassing a staggering 1 billion yen ($6.9 million) at the box office, solidifying its universal appeal. Such a triumphant premiere has resulted in an extended run of the film in Japan. Furthermore, this production marks the first feature film from Studio Durian, a company founded by Oshiyama.
Before his involvement with Look Back, Oshiyama served as a Key Animator for Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and also contributed to the anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. The director had previously expressed his intention to approach the Look Back film in a unique manner compared to the manga. Therefore, even if one is familiar with the manga, there is still the anticipation of the theatrical release.
The Story of Look Back
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga, Look Back, was originally published in the Shonen Jump+ magazine on July 19, 2021. Fans can look forward to a movie adaptation, which is scheduled to debut in Japanese theatres on June 28, 2024.
The plot centers on the bond between two aspiring manga creators, Ayumu Fujino and her classmate Kyomoto, who is a shut-in. As they develop a friendly rivalry, they discover a shared passion for creating manga. This marks a departure from Fujimoto’s previous works, with a promise of a more heartfelt and emotionally impactful experience. Both long-time fans and newcomers are eagerly awaiting its release.
