Tatsuki Fujimoto’s exploration of love goes beyond conventional rationality, pushing boundaries in new directions. Recently, the author shared insights on social media about his forthcoming romance horror project that holds a somewhat unsettling appeal. This theme is prevalent throughout his works, as love often feels like an elusive goal. In this way, Chainsaw Man subverts conventional romance tropes in several intriguing ways.

Fans Horrified at Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Future Plans

Tatsuki Fujimoto is a gifted manga artist, well-known for his dark fantasy works and particularly praised for his earlier series, Fire Punch. However, it was the success of Chainsaw Man that garnered him widespread recognition. This anime draws considerable inspiration from slasher films, notably in its effective use of horror and gore elements, while also presenting unique concepts regarding demons and half-human characters.

The series delves into themes of survival, deprivation, longing, and desire, all of which resonate deeply with Denji’s character. His longing for connection intertwines with his desperation for affection. Still, Fujimoto cleverly veers away from traditional romance narratives, which is explicated further in his romantic-themed writings. Although the concept appears captivating, especially considering Fujimoto’s distinct approach to romantic narratives, his perception of relationships diverges significantly from traditional depictions—especially in the portrayal of female characters and power dynamics within the series.

Chainsaw Man Deviates From Standard Approach to Love

In Chainsaw Man, romance and complexity are interwoven, largely due to characters’ infidelities. The narrative strays from standard romantic clichés in its representation of relationships, notably illustrating the power dynamics among characters, including the commanding presence of figures such as Makima. Yet, there is a deeper layer to consider.

Fujimoto adeptly portrays the dominant woman archetype within his narrative, as seen in the intricate relationship between Makima and Denji. The latter willingly agrees to her terms in exchange for survival. Additionally, Fujimoto’s fondness for strong women surfaces in an interview where he reflected:

I also like domineering and irrational women. In college, there was a girl who was mean to me, and then one day at school my bicycle had fallen over. I was wondering what happened, when she said “I knocked your bike over, ha ha ha!” I was so happy.

This representation of powerful women offers a fresh perspective, allowing Fujimoto to subvert traditional gender roles and the associated power plays.

Nonetheless, despite the excitement surrounding Fujimoto’s upcoming concept, its execution appears equally nonsensical. This is especially true in his interpretation of romantic horror, as most audiences crave feel-good love stories, thus presenting a challenge for his extreme notions within a horror romance framework.

About Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is a manga series by Tatsuki Fujimoto that was serialized from December 2018 to 2020 and resumed in July 2022 with a second part. The series has also been adapted into an anime by MAPPA.

The plot centers around Denji, an orphaned boy who becomes a devil hunter to survive and pay off his deceased father’s debt. After a mission leads to the death of his pet devil, Pochita, Denji awakens to discover that they have merged into a single entity known as Chainsaw Man. To avoid being killed, he must join the government and continue hunting demons.
