Since its debut at the end of 2024, Squid Game Season 2 has shattered streaming records; however, it surprisingly did not clinch the title of most-watched series in the United States at the beginning of 2025. That distinction instead belongs to a series created by Taylor Sheridan.
It’s no shock that the second season of Squid Game has enjoyed considerable success. The inaugural season was a groundbreaking phenomenon, quickly establishing itself as Netflix’s most-viewed non-English series ever.
With relentless dedication, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk poured his heart and soul into crafting Season 2, presenting audiences with more intense challenges and an explosive finale, ultimately leading to an impressive 126.2 million views within just the first eleven days.
The series premiered on December 26, and many anticipated it would secure the top spot in Netflix’s rankings as 2025 began. However, that was not the case.
Landman Tops Streaming Charts for Early 2025
While Squid Game Season 2 dominated the streaming scene at the end of 2024, a new report by The Wrap revealed that Paramount Plus’s Landman, also helmed by Taylor Sheridan, was the most streamed series from December 30, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
Despite Netflix’s overwhelming presence, with seven out of the top ten shows belonging to the platform, Landman captured the number one position. The series explores the thrilling realm of Texas oil rigging through the character of Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton.
This data is drawn from Samba TV, which compiles ratings from over three million households, ensuring a representation aligned with US Census demographics. The report covers streaming movie and original series viewership, including those that also aired on traditional television.

This revelation has ignited lively discussions among viewers, with many expressing disbelief that Landman could eclipse Squid Game’s viewership.
In reaction to a Reddit discussion linking the report, some users doubted Landman’s success. One commenter asserted, “There’s no chance in the world Landman has more streamers or viewership, particularly from a Paramount+ show.” Another voiced skepticism, stating, “There’s no way this is accurate.”
However, some individuals acknowledged this reality while remaining astonished, with one sharing, “That’s actually kinda insane considering how big Squid Game was,” while noting that “Taylor Sheridan is a force of nature I don’t understand.”
Criticisms of Landman were also prevalent; one person remarked, “That is so disturbing. Landman is one of the worst shows ever made,”while another suggested that Sheridan appeals to demographics often overlooked by major productions.
Currently, Landman airs on Paramount+, and both seasons of Squid Game are available on Netflix. For those interested in the future, details about Squid Game Season 3, purported ‘Squid Game Cinematic Universe’ theories, and release dates for upcoming episodes of Landman are available to explore.
