Controversy Surrounds Team BDS CEO Following Outrageous Remarks
Patrice Bailo de Spoelberch, the CEO of Team BDS, has recently stirred significant controversy on social media platform Twitter (now known as X). Just a day after his remarks sparked outrage, one of the year’s most anticipated Rocket League events has been abruptly canceled. In response to this incident, Team BDS has announced plans for “internal measures”against de Spoelberch.
Team BDS: A Major Player in Esports
Renowned as one of France’s foremost esports organizations, Team BDS has made a name for itself in various competitive gaming arenas, including Rainbow 6: Siege and League of Legends. Their Rocket League team, in particular, has achieved remarkable success, clinching championships in both 2022 and 2024.
Challenges Ahead for Rocket League Roster
Despite their illustrious history, Team BDS has faced challenges recently, leading to the unfortunate dissolution of their star-studded Rocket League roster due to sustainability concerns. Nonetheless, the organization had hoped to continue their legacy in the scene by organizing the upcoming “Take the Throne”event, as Rocket League plays a crucial role in their brand identity.
Cancellation of “Take the Throne”Event
The situation took a drastic turn after de Spoelberch’s now-deleted tweet, in which he stated, “A woman who dares to use abortion should lose the right to ever have children.” This comment led several featured teams to announce their withdrawal from the event, prompting Team BDS to cancel it altogether. Team Vitality issued a statement outlining their decision, saying:
“Following last night’s disrespectful and controversial comments on women’s rights by the owner of the organizing team, we have taken the decision to withdraw from the Rocket League competition. We strongly condemn these remarks and can in no way accept associating our clubs and our values with such rhetoric.”
Other teams such as Karmine Corp and Gentlemates quickly echoed this sentiment, leading to widespread withdrawals and refund processes for ticket holders.
BDS Responds: Internal Measures and Apologies
In light of the backlash, Team BDS acted swiftly to distance itself from de Spoelberch’s comments, committing to internal reviews and emphasizing that his views do not align with the organization’s values. Following this, the CEO issued an apology on social media, stating:
“I want to apologize for the tweet posted yesterday. I realize after rereading that it is extremely clumsy and does not reflect my true thoughts. Every woman must have control over her body and is free to terminate a pregnancy. Again, sorry to all the women and people I offended.”
Fan Reactions and Future Implications
Fans have had mixed reactions to the situation, with some expressing that his comments are “unacceptable.” While many have stated they do not hold Team BDS accountable for the CEO’s actions, there are increasing calls for him to resign from his position. This incident raises important questions about leadership accountability in esports and the broader implications for organizations navigating sensitive social issues.
As the esports community processes this situation, it reflects a growing awareness of the importance of inclusive and respectful dialogue within the industry.
