Team Rocket’s Explanation for Dark-Type Absence in Pokemon Red & Blue

Have you ever questioned the reason behind the introduction of Dark-type Pokemon solely in Johto? According to a popular fan theory, the absence of these shadowy creatures in the Gen 1 games could be attributed to the presence of Team Rocket and the creation of Mewtwo.

The creators of the mainline Pokemon games have often been faced with the challenge of providing vague explanations for the retcons that occur with the addition of new types to the roster. This was evident during the introduction of Dark and Steel types in Gen 2, and once again when the Fairy type was incorporated in Gen 6.

The games not only recognize the existence of a previously unnoticed type, but also reveal that existing Pokemon have secondary types that were never utilized in the past.

A theory on the Pokemon Conspiracies Reddit post suggests that Dark-type Pokemon were absent in Gen 1 because of Team Rocket’s involvement. According to the theory, Team Rocket eliminated or captured all the Dark-type Pokemon in the Kanto region to ensure Mewtwo’s dominance with its powerful Psychic typing.

Team Rocket could have paved the way for Mewtwo

This scheme revolves around merging the canon of the games with other types of Pokemon media. Although Team Rocket’s connection to Mewtwo was not established until Generation 7, they were strongly intertwined in both the Pokemon anime and Adventures manga series.

The theory is supported by the fact that Houndour and Murkrow, which were not present in the Kanto region in Gen 1, are native to the area in Pokemon Gold & Silver. This suggests that they may have returned after Team Rocket’s disbandment in the years that followed.

The lack of a second Dark-type in Gen 2 is due to the fact that Umbreon had not yet been discovered and the Tyranitar line was exclusive to the Johto region.

Despite the fact that it was not included in the Gen 1 remakes by the creators, this theory does provide a plausible explanation for the mysterious absence of Dark types in Kanto. It connects it to two of the most formidable opponents in the games, adding an intriguing headcanon to the story.
