Ted Season 2: Nearly Canceled for a Surprising Reason

Despite the show’s popularity and high viewership, Ted Season 2 was in danger of being canceled due to an unexpected issue, however, it is now in the works at Peacock.

In the year 2012, Seth Macfarlane entered the world of directing with his first film, Ted, which told the story of Mark Wahlberg’s stoner slacker and his unconventional best friend – a talking teddy bear – in a comedic buddy adventure.

Despite a slightly underwhelming sequel, the original movie was still a massive triumph, receiving excellent reviews and earning nearly $550 million globally, making it one of the top-grossing films of the year.

Earlier this year, Ted made a comeback in a prequel TV series that delved into his formative years alongside John Bennett (portrayed by Max Burkholder). The show captured all the typical high school shenanigans, including purchasing marijuana, attempting to sneak mature films out of the video rental store, and losing their virginity.

Despite facing a small problem, the show maintained the high performance of its predecessors and became Peacock’s most-watched original title to date, with a 73% Rotten Tomatoes score. As a result, a second season was quickly approved.

Puck News reported that the budget for each episode of Ted Season 2 is a whopping $8 million, almost resulting in its cancellation.

“Why does it come at such a steep price, you may wonder? I want to clarify that this is not meant to criticize the show, but its visuals are not particularly stunning and it has not secured any big names from Hollywood.”

Maintaining the CGI on Ted is not a simple task, as stated by MacFarlane himself, as it requires an “outrageous”budget.

When Universal approached me with the idea of a Ted series, I was initially hesitant. I hadn’t considered revisiting that character, but their suggestion piqued my interest. I expressed my concern about the potential cost, to which they assured me they would maintain the quality. This was confirmed by Seth MacFarlane in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“While feature-quality, entirely computer-generated main characters have been seen in many motion pictures, the same level has yet to be achieved on television. Therefore, creating such a character for television felt like venturing into uncharted territory.”

Rest assured, Ted will be back for Season 2 and there’s even talk of an accompanying animated series in the works.
