Despite facing criticism, Teen Vogue is being accused of disrespecting Gaeul, a member of IVE.
On May 21, 2024, Teen Vogue posted a video featuring IVE participating in the channel’s “Compliment Battle”series. In the video, members took turns reading compliments from fans and trying to make each other laugh. The member who laughed first was declared the loser.
Gaeul and Jang Wonyoung were the initial pair to accept the challenge. Jang Wonyoung came across a tweet that read, “This song is unbeatable; nothing else can match its greatness. I am obsessed with it. And Gaeul’s rap is absolute fire, no apologies needed, I don’t make the rules.”
Yet, it was quickly noted that the tweet was posted on July 4, 2020. Since IVE’s debut was in 2021, it is unlikely that the tweet was referring to IVE’s Gaeul, but rather to another idol with the same name.
It was confirmed to be accurate. A brief investigation revealed that the original tweet was commending FAVORITE member Gaeul’s rap in their song “Fancy.”The girl group made their debut in 2017, and the tweet was shared by a fan to celebrate their third anniversary.
This is not the first instance in which a Western media platform has received criticism for allegedly showing disrespect towards a member of IVE. In a recent occurrence, IVE was featured on WIRED’s “Answer The Web’s Most Search Questions”segment. During IVE’s segment, her real name, Kim Ji Won, was used.
The questions were soon recognized as not being directed towards Liz, but rather towards South Korean actress Kim Ji Won.
Despite this being the second instance of a Western media outlet failing to conduct proper research, the disappointment and frustration felt by DIVEs (IVE’s fandom) is understandable. Accusing Teen Vogue of negligence and laziness, fans expressed their disappointment and frustration, believing it to be a reflection of the outlet’s lack of appreciation for IVE.
teen vogue is actually so weird for adding this comment there was literally tags and pics in the og posts letting them know it wasn’t about her but they still added it? pic.twitter.com/vDZG9IKkOW

Wired & teen vogue.. watch out if there’s more from US interviews… they’re so lazy even to do a little research for IVE, it shows that if they appreciate the girls by doing so but such a disappointing and a little rude to add comments that’s totally not for ive.

Although the two idols did not respond to the comment, it is probable that Jang Wonyoung realized it was not meant for Gaeul. She must have noticed the date the tweet was posted on the card they provided.
Oh that got me messed up…. And they would know because of the debut date 😐
