Terrifier 3 Director Aims to Make Art the Clown the “Opposite” of Pennywise

Pennywise and Art, though both unsettling clowns, are fundamentally different. This distinction was a deliberate choice by Damien Leone, the director of Terrifier 3.

There’s certainly room in the horror genre for both characters. Many fans might argue that Art is infinitely more terrifying than Pennywise, transforming the iconic IT antagonist into something resembling the friendly Barney the Dinosaur. Art’s humor, bizarre nature, and extreme sadism set him apart, especially when it comes to his death scenes, which are far more inventive.

The director further elaborated, saying, “Not only will Art never speak, but he won’t make any sounds at all. I believe that trait enhances his effectiveness and distinguishes him from Pennywise from the very start.”

Leone emphasized his goal of contrasting Art with Pennywise, which is why the character lacks vibrant colors and verbal communication. “I always found silent characters to be more unsettling. However, as Art evolves into a more comedic figure, he gradually loses that eerie quality,” he noted.

Although Art adopts a playful demeanor in Terrifier 3, Leone suggests he might be more frightening than ever. “I think this blend of humor with sheer horror and sadism is what makes him so effective,” he remarked.

Additionally, Leone commented on Art’s character in a broader context, stating he will never engage in sexual activity. Without revealing too much, there is a nod to this theme in Terrifier 3, but Art remains disinterested in such pursuits.

However, he suggested that if Art were inclined towards relationships, he wouldn’t struggle to find companions. “He definitely has a notable female fan following, no doubt,” he added. “They are drawn to his character, so I’d say he’d manage well.”

Fortunately for us, Art is solely motivated by his bloodlust. Fans can anticipate numerous thrilling encounters in Terrifier 3, which is set to hit theaters on October 11.
