From the beginning of the series, Itadori Yuji, the main character of Jujutsu Kaisen, has carried the burden of pain. As the series reached its conclusion, the author did not hold back as Sukuna continued to inflict further suffering upon Itadori’s beloved friends.
First, Mahito destroyed Junpei, followed by Sukuna’s destruction of the people of Shibuya through the protagonist’s body. The protagonist’s suffering did not end there, as Nanami Kento, his teacher, also fell victim to Mahito. The final saga marked the tragic end of Yuji’s beloved mentor, Gojo Satoru.
Despite fans’ expectations for the protagonist to suffer in the series’ conclusion, it may not happen in the way they anticipate. Rather than Sukuna, it is Megumi who is bestowed with the authority to activate the merger before Kenjaku’s death. While Sukuna could potentially activate the merger through his control over Megumi, Itadori may ultimately become the dominant entity in the merger due to his role as Kenjaku’s creation.
Unraveling Yuji’s Tragic End in the Final Arc of Jujutsu Kaisen
Itadori Yuji, the main character of the Jujutsu Kaisen series, was initially introduced as a non-sorcerer in the first episode. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he became the vessel for Ryomen Sukuna, the most powerful sorcerer in history. As a result, Yuji became a target for every cursed spirit, all due to his connection to the King of Curses.
Mahito, a cursed spirit of special rank, became fixated on causing suffering to Itadori. He formed a bond with Junpei, who eventually became Itadori’s friend. However, when the opportunity arose to rescue Junpei, Mahito used his cursed technique to end his life in front of Itadori. Desperate for aid, Itadori pleaded with Sukuna for assistance, but the demon also declined. This marked the beginning of Itadori’s journey of anguish.
During the Shibuya arc, Sukuna possessed Yuji and battled Mahoraga. In the process, he used his domain expansion to slaughter numerous innocent citizens at Shibuya station, causing Itadori immense anguish. Furthermore, Mahito murdered Nanami in front of him and gravely wounded Nobara, leading Itadori to lose his determination to keep fighting.
Thankfully, Aoi’s arrival lifted his spirits, though it was short-lived. In the Shinjuku Showdown arc, Gojo Satoru was killed by Sukuna, who had taken over the body of the sorcerer. Itadori had exhausted all his tears and instead, focused on the battle. Itadori gained a new ally in Higurama during this fight, but as expected, Higurama met his demise as well.
In the final saga, only a handful of Itadori’s companions remain alive to face the King of Curses. Can he protect them or will they become sacrifices, though not in the way fans would expect? Prior to his death at the hands of Okkotsu Yuta, Kenjaku passed on the responsibility of activating the great merger between humanity and Tengen to Megumi, rather than the King of Curses.
It was possible that he had assumed Sukuna would retain control over Megumi’s body, a notion supported by the events a few chapters earlier when Itadori attempted to revive Megumi but found him already resigned. Therefore, the final choice to initiate the merging may ultimately rest with the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.
Nevertheless, in order for the merger to be initiated, a crucial factor may also be required, which would serve as a catalyst. This catalyst is a vessel that will prevent the ultimate cursed spirit, formed from the combination of Tengen and humanity, from losing control. This vessel could potentially be Itadori, the creation of Kenjaku with a specific purpose, who could fulfill the role of containing the ultimate cursed spirit post-merger.
It is highly unlikely that Sukuna would have anticipated this turn of events, as Kenjaku’s motive for initiating the merger was not to make Sukuna the ruler, but to advance humanity to a higher level of existence. This would result in all individuals, including Itadori’s surviving allies, being transformed into a cursed spirit and being subject to the protagonist’s control.
As the merger takes effect, Sukuna’s cursed energy may deplete, thus diminishing his connection to Megumi’s body. This could potentially create an opening for Itadori, who transformed into a colossal cursed spirit by sacrificing his comrades, to defeat the powerful King of Curses.
Unfortunately, there is currently no known method of reversing the merger. As a result, there is a possibility that Yuji, who is destined to become the vessel for the merger, could inadvertently cause the death of all sorcerers.
Conclusion
At first glance, this theory may appear implausible, but it becomes more understandable when considering the past. In his final moments, Kenjaku proclaimed that his will would be passed down to someone in the future.
It would be logical for Itadori Yuji, the vessel he was created, to carry on his will and take on the role of merging with Kenjaku, as he had been planning for many years. This aligns with the belief that Sukuna cannot be defeated alone, and with the assistance of his sorcerer friends and all of Japan, Yuji may be able to defeat him through the merger’s cursed spirit.
