The 3-Body Problem made a successful landing on Netflix, but will the eight episodes of the series be continued in a season 2?
Five years after the complicated conclusion of Game of Thrones, showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss teamed up with True Blood’s Alexander Woo to adapt Liu Cixin’s novel, The 3-Body Problem. And the series on Netflix quickly caused a sensation, obtaining first place in the top 10 of the platform from the very first days.
We discover a divided humanity, while strange phenomena strike the scientific community and “break” our science. But after numerous twists and turns, it is clear that the story is not designed to end after eight episodes: will there be a season 2 of the series The Three-Body Problem?
Will the series The 3-Body Problem have a season 2 on Netflix?
At this stage, Netflix has not confirmed the renewal of the series The Three-Body Problem in a season 2. But many clues suggest that a sequel is well and truly planned.
The fact that the story is only just beginning and is already pointing to the announcement of a sequel. Because the series only adapts the first novel of a trilogy: the author Liu Cixin also signed volume 2, The Dark Forest, and volume 3, The Immortal Death.
But other details suggest that season 2 is well planned: notably the words of the showrunners, who say they are only waiting for the green light from Netflix to take action. David Benioff explained in an interview for Games Radar that a season 2 was not “yet” confirmed, but that we had to act as if it was the case and go straight ahead: “If we get the green light for a second season, we will have to start quickly in terms of pre-production and production, so that viewers can discover it in a reasonable time.”
The adaptation of the first volume led to numerous modifications to the story invented by Liu Cixin, already complex in itself. Adapting the second volume would therefore not be an easy task, and it could be that season 2 of The Three-Body Problem will not be ready for several years, in the event of validation by Netflix.
At this stage, the streaming platform has not yet revealed its exact figures for the first days of viewing of the series. But it will also be necessary to take into account the substantial budget for each episode of season 1 of The 3-Body Problem, estimated at $20 million, before making a decision.
We will update this space as soon as new information becomes available on season 2 of the series The Three-Body Problem.
