Right now, there is a diverse range of heroes gracing the small screen, from Marvel to DC and from live-action to animation. Therefore, here is a list of the top 30 superhero TV shows that are currently worth watching.
Ever since the first X-Men movie hit theaters in the early 2000s, superhero movies have been a dominant force in Hollywood, bringing in massive profits and garnering a dedicated following for Marvel and DC. And much like the Incredible Hulk, the genre has only grown larger over the years.
However, it seemed that conquering the film industry was not sufficient for Marvel. After captivating audiences with their iconic heroes, they proceeded to create multiple television series featuring their beloved characters. DC also had a stake in this game, as both companies aimed to extend their legacies into the world of television.
While the concept of superhero TV shows may appear to be a recent trend, they have actually been in existence for many decades. Even before Kevin Feige dreamed up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were various choices available for avid TV viewers to satisfy their craving for superhero stories. Keeping this in mind, here is a list of the top 30 superhero TV shows.
The Story of Moon Knight (2022)
Summary: The story centers around Steven Grant (played by Oscar Isaac), who dreams of being a museum tour guide. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he awakens in the Alps with no recollection of how he got there. To make matters even more complicated, he discovers that he shares his body with another personality, Marc Spector. As if that wasn’t enough, Steven soon realizes that he is actually the supernatural superhero known as Moon Knight and embarks on a quest to save the world.
Our opinion is that Moon Knight, Marvel’s response to Batman, is a highly ambitious and thrilling show. We must acknowledge the impressive cast, which includes not only Oscar Isaac as the titular character but also Ethan Hawke as the dangerous Arthur Harrow. Unfortunately, the show concluded with a cliffhanger. As Moon Knight Season 2 is not yet confirmed, we are eagerly anticipating what will happen to Steven and Marc. Streaming options: Disney+.

Teen Titans Go! (2013-Present)
Synopsis: Teen Titans Go! is a humorous adaptation of the beloved teenage superhero squad. The show follows the misadventures of Beast Boy, Robin, Cyborg, Raven, and Starfire as they engage in various forms of mischief.
Our opinion: Whether for better or worse, the DC universe has often been associated with a gritty tone. However, Teen Titans Go! shatters this image and takes it to a whole new level. With its playful and endearing nature, this animated series serves as a comical tribute to the entire DC universe. One of its most commendable aspects is its willingness to poke fun at anyone and anything, displaying a clever and daring disregard. Where to watch: Stream on Max or Hulu.

Superman and Lois (2021-Present)
Synopsis: A spin-off of Supergirl, this delightful series continues the story of Lois and Clark as they adjust to their new life in Smallville with their twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan Kent. As one would anticipate, having a world-renowned journalist and a superhero in the family leads to a flurry of complications.
Our opinion: This charming show offers a refreshingly grounded perspective on the Superman story, incorporating soap opera elements that have made other CW shows successful. It is filled with heartfelt moments, making it difficult for viewers not to develop an emotional attachment to the Kent family. Despite this, the show stays true to its roots as a Superman series, providing plenty of exciting action to balance out the more emotional moments.

About the story: The story is set in a world where all individuals possess a superpower. We follow the journey of Jen, who is one of the few remaining individuals without any powers. As Jen navigates through her struggles of finding her place in this world, we witness both her triumphs and numerous challenges.
Our opinion: With a perfect blend of classic British humor and superhero elements, Extraordinary is a hilarious and captivating show. It’s like if Peep Show’s Mark had the power to read minds, and the overall tone of Extraordinary is similar. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially for those who dislike cringe comedy, there is a charm to the show that makes it easy to adore. Available to stream on: Disney+

26. The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005)
Synopsis: A mishap in the laboratory of Professor Utonium led to the creation of three extraordinary little girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. Made from a perfect blend of sugar, spice, and everything nice, the girls were given superpowers by the addition of Chemical X to their formula. With their powers, they devoted themselves to protecting the world from crime and evil forces.
The Powerpuff Girls were a beloved part of Saturday morning cartoons for those who grew up in the ’90s, known for their vibrant and entertaining nature. However, beyond their outward appearance, the show cleverly parodied and poked fun at the common cliches and conventions found in superhero stories.

25. Umbrella Academy (2019-present)
Synopsis: Adapted from Gerard Way’s well-known comic (yes, the same Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance), this unconventional series tells the story of a group of adopted children with extraordinary abilities, raised by the eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Together, they must battle against crime and brace themselves to protect the world from an enigmatic impending danger.
Our opinion: With one of the most talented ensemble casts on television (we could watch Elliot Page watch paint dry), this delightfully quirky show is consistently inventive and bold. Despite its eccentricity, Umbrella Academy remains a touching exploration of family ties, and it effectively centers this theme throughout. We’re eagerly anticipating the release of Season 4 and believe you should be too.

Arrow TV Series (2012-2020)
Synopsis: The CW’s The Arrow is a television series based on DC’s Green Arrow, featuring the wealthy Oliver Queen as the main character. While he may seem to lead a lavish lifestyle during the day, Oliver’s nights are spent as the enigmatic vigilante, The Arrow, using his archery skills to protect the city’s streets.
In our opinion, Arrow was both thrilling and subtly groundbreaking. Although the show’s popularity dwindled in its later seasons, its dynamic energy and dramatic storylines paved the way for all of the CW’s subsequent superhero shows, and it could even be argued that it created the most cohesive shared universe among DC’s iconic heroes (apologies to fans of Snyder). Despite this, Arrow never failed to entertain, skillfully blending a pulpy atmosphere with impressive action scenes.

Hawkeye (2021)
Synopsis: Do you recall the time when Hawkeye spent half a decade taking down all the criminals who survived the snap caused by Thanos? Maya Lopez remembers it clearly and is now seeking revenge. This would not have been a concern for Clint, an Avenger, if it weren’t for Kate Bishop, an aspiring sidekick, getting involved in the situation and causing his minor headache to escalate into a major problem.
Our Opinion: Hawkeye offers a delightful holiday surprise, successfully blending the trademark Marvel spectacle with impressive character development. Finally, Clint, often overshadowed by his fellow superheroes, gets the chance to showcase why he is truly one of Earth’s mightiest heroes. Additionally, it’s impossible not to become enamored with Kate Bishop.
Without a doubt, the true reason to tune in to this extraordinary series is for the long-awaited appearance of Vincent D’Onofrio’s commanding Kingpin in the mainstream MCU, after being relegated to the outskirts of canon for so long.

22. Legion TV Series (2017-2019)
Synopsis: In a parallel universe to the popular X-Men films, Legion centers around David Haller, a mutant with immense psychic abilities who also battles with schizophrenia. David is on the run from a malevolent group that seeks to exploit his powers for their own gain. However, his challenges are far from over.
Our opinion: Although Legion may have gone unnoticed by many, it is a must-watch for any fans of the X-Men comics. This show is both eerie and vibrant, and most importantly, incredibly imaginative. If you’re tired of the over-reliance on CGI in superhero movies (yes, even Ant-Man 3), then you must witness the mind-blowing psychic showdown between David and the Shadow King. It will leave a lasting impact on you.

Peacemaker TV Series (2021-Present)
About the movie: Peacemaker takes place after the events of the successful Suicide Squad film. The story follows Christopher Smith (played by John Cena), also known as Peacemaker, who is once again involved in a mission with Task Force X. This time, the reformed killer must assist in stopping an alien plot to take over the world.
Our opinion: Peacemaker is anarchic and irreverent, with a level of violence and crudeness that we wouldn’t want any other way. After years of serious superhero movies and shows, it’s refreshing to see something that fully embraces the weird and wonderful potential of comic books. While Peacemaker may be the main character, those who have watched it know that the true star of the show is the comedic Vigilante, who may just be the greatest character in the DCEU, even if he’s not the most heroic. We are eagerly anticipating the second season of Peacemaker.

20. Swamp Thing (2019)
Synopsis: After a mysterious virus ravages Marais, Louisiana, Abbie Arcane seeks assistance from biologist Alec Holland. Unfortunately, Alec is seemingly killed by sinister forces lurking in the nearby swamp. Yet, there may be more to his death than meets the eye. Has Alec truly perished, or has he risen again as the monstrous, muck-covered creature known as Swamp Thing?
Our opinion: This dark adaptation, inspired by Alan Moore’s iconic Swamp Thing comics, is both gruesome and grisly. However, it also stands out as a brilliantly executed superhero TV show. Its use of practical effects adds to the overall frightening atmosphere, and the decision to have a man in a suit portray Swamp Thing instead of relying on CGI is impressive.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998)
Synopsis: Taking place a few years into Spider-Man’s tenure as a crime-fighting hero, The Animated Series chronicles Peter Parker’s adjustment to university life. Despite the challenges of balancing his studies with nightly battles against supervillains, Peter continues to fulfill his duties as Spider-Man and use his spider-like abilities to protect the city.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series may not have received the same level of recognition as Batman’s cartoon, but both shows share a similar tone. Despite being based on characters typically associated with children, both shows took a more mature approach. While Batman’s visually striking animation garnered significant critical acclaim, Spidey’s cartoon never quite achieved the same level of success.
It can be argued that this cartoon significantly altered an important aspect of Spider-Man’s story when it took on the Black Suit Saga. Spider-Man: The Animated Series was responsible for the change in the symbiote’s behavior, which had a significant impact on Peter’s emotions, a concept that has been incorporated into every adaptation since. This alone makes it a worthy contender for a spot on this list.

Marvel’s Newest Superhero: Ms Marvel (2022)
Kamala Khan, a young girl, dreams of becoming a superhero and spending time with her role model, Carol Danvers. Her dream becomes a reality when her family’s heirloom activates her hidden abilities, and she transforms into the powerful Ms. Marvel, defender of New Jersey.
Our opinion: We believe that the delightful and imaginative Ms Marvel is possibly the greatest debut of a new hero since Spider-Man Homecoming. Iman Vellani is flawlessly chosen to play the cheerful Kamala, exuding the ideal amount of excitement without becoming bothersome. Though we were initially hesitant about the alteration to Kamala’s abilities (she is stretchy in the comics), we have grown fond of this rendition of the beloved character.

17. Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006)
Synopsis: Continuing from the events of the Justice League animated series, this new installment shifts its focus to the larger group of superheroes who have joined DC’s top crime-fighting squad. With a roster of over 50 members, the league faces off against the nefarious Cadmus organization and the menacing Secret Society in their ongoing battles.
Our opinion: Despite not receiving the same level of recognition as other shows in the Timmverse, do not underestimate Justice League: Unlimited. It is just as sophisticated and intricate as its predecessors. This series expertly manages a large roster of heroes, featuring some lesser-known characters such as Vigilante, a cowboy superhero. Prior to watching Justice League: Unlimited, I was unaware of this character, but now he will always be remembered.

16. The Sandman (2022-Present)
Summary: In the past, a conceited magician attempted to capture Death but ended up imprisoning her sibling, Morpheus, the ruler of Dreams. After being released, Morpheus returns to his kingdom only to discover it in ruins. With his creations no longer under his control, Morpheus embarks on a journey to rebuild his kingdom, but the world has evolved and hidden threats await in the shadows.
Our initial thoughts: Many believed that The Sandman was impossible to adapt for the screen, but Netflix has proven that dreams can become reality. This exceptional rendition of Neil Gaiman’s remarkable comic series captures the indescribable enchantment of his original work while also updating it for modern viewers. If we had to pinpoint what makes it so extraordinary, we would likely highlight its dedication to staying true to Gaiman’s book. And the excitement doesn’t end here; we can look forward to The Sandman Season 2 with great anticipation.

15. Upcoming Loki TV Series (2021-2023)
Synopsis: Taking place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki centers on a different incarnation of the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) who is enlisted by Moebius (Owen Wilson) and the Time Variance Authority to confront another version of himself causing chaos in the fabric of time. This sets off a perplexing journey through the multiverse and beyond, leading to the very end of time.
My opinion: While some may describe Loki as Marvel’s version of Doctor Who, I believe the series is more accurately described as a captivating character study. It delves into the complexities of Loki’s morality and his desire for belonging, showcasing Tom Hiddleston’s exceptional portrayal of the god of mischief. With this performance, Loki solidifies his place as one of the greatest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)
Synopsis: Spectacular Spider-Man follows the challenges faced by Peter Parker during the early stages of his superhero career. Juggling his personal life and crime-fighting duties proves to be a difficult task for Peter, resulting in numerous failures. As he navigates through this chaos, Peter gains allies and enemies, with the criminal world constantly producing supervillains to defeat the Wallcrawler.
Our opinion: In our view, Spectacular is undeniably the most impressive interpretation of Spider-Man to date (and yes, that includes the movies). The show seamlessly combines the most captivating Spidey storylines, drawing inspiration from Lee and Ditko’s early work on the character as well as Brian Bendis’s modern tales in the Ultimate books.
Despite its impressive visuals, the true key to Spectacular’s triumph is its extraordinary storytelling. The narrative is expertly crafted, providing a sense of clarity and momentum that elevates it above the typical Spider-Man cartoon. It’s a captivating and exhilarating experience that leaves viewers wanting more. While it’s unfortunate that Season 3 never came to fruition, perhaps Spider-Man Freshman Year can continue the legacy of this incredible show.

13. TV Show: Misfits
The premise: A group of delinquent teenagers in the UK are forced to do community service together. However, a sudden storm unleashes extraordinary powers within them, and they soon discover that they are not the only ones with these newfound abilities…
Our opinion: For those seeking a superhero series with a darker edge that strays from the typical themes of truth, justice, and the “American Way,”Misfits offers a refreshing alternative. What sets Misfits apart is its rejection of the glamor and grandeur often associated with superhero stories. In fact, the characters’ powers are more of a hindrance than a help. Overall, the show is delightfully crude and hilariously entertaining.

12. WandaVision
Synopsis: Taking place in the realm of television, Wanda uses her abilities to construct a reality where she and Vision can experience wedded bliss in different decades. The couple embarks on a journey through diverse eras and genres, transitioning from one sitcom to the next.
Our perspective: Although it was not the initial Marvel series, WandaVision is widely regarded as one of the top shows on Disney+. It was a risky move for Marvel, but it definitely paid off. Not only was it creatively well-done, but the story also delivered. The show surprised us with unexpected returns of characters and introduction of new villains, and fans were thrilled.

11. Watchmen
Overview: Adapted from Alan Moore’s graphic novels, Watchmen portrays a society where vigilantes are viewed as outlaws. The show centers on Angela Abar, also known as Sister Night, as she delves into the rise of a white supremacist organization in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Our opinion: While Zack Snyder’s film was a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, the Watchmen TV show successfully captured the subversive essence of the comics while also introducing original elements. Some scenes, like the recreation of the Tulsa race massacre, leave a lasting impact. However, the show as a whole constructs a cynical and refreshing world, setting it apart from the typical superhero-driven narratives.

10. Jessica Jones (2015-2019)
The show centers around Jessica Jones, a former superhero who gave up her heroic duties after being manipulated by the villainous Kilgrave into committing a murder. When Kilgrave resurfaces in New York, Jessica must face her past and put an end to the threat he poses as the ‘purple man’.
Despite Marvel’s previous presence on Netflix, Jessica Jones remained a success. While Netflix did not publicly release audience numbers, it was recognized that the show garnered a strong following among female viewers.
Jessica, the antihero with the perfect balance of flaws, was a standout character in the acclaimed neo-noir series. In hindsight, numerous fans consider it to be one of the top Marvel TV shows of all time. Featuring a truly wicked antagonist and a gripping first season, Jessica Jones is a must-watch for those seeking an early Marvel journey.

The Flash (2014-2023)
Synopsis: Throughout ten seasons of The Flash, viewers witnessed the journey of Barry Allen, also known as the fastest man alive, as he evolved from a novice hero to one of the most iconic superheroes on the CW network. Along the way, he faced off against nefarious speedsters, numerous malevolent metahumans, and even joined forces with other heroes.
The 2023 film adaptation of The Flash may have disappointed movie-goers, but the CW TV series is actually worth watching. Like other shows on the network, The Flash can be cheesy and silly at times. However, this does not detract from its overall enjoyment. Those who are able to embrace the lightheartedness of the show will find it to be a charming and enjoyable ride.
Despite the series’ strong association with the character, fans were left questioning whether Grant Gustin, who portrayed Barry Allen on the show, would make an appearance in the DC movie. However, he did not (which is strange, considering the numerous Hollywood actors who did), but the show remains a reliable option for those seeking a superior portrayal of the fastest man on earth.

8. Heroes (2006-2010)
The show, Heroes, focuses on a group of ordinary individuals from different parts of the world who discover they have superhuman abilities. This engaging series introduces viewers to a diverse cast of characters, including a cheerleader with regenerative powers and an office worker who can time-travel. It’s the ultimate story of everyday people transforming into heroes. Despite criticism for its later seasons, Heroes remains one of the most unique superhero shows of its time. For a while, it was the only television series that offered comic book fans the perfect combination of superpowers and high-stakes action.

7. Invincible (2021-present)

When Mark’s dream finally comes true and he gains invincibility, he quickly realizes that being a superhero involves more than just wearing a costume and fighting villains. Our opinion: Despite being one of many animated superhero TV shows, Invincible stands out by blending animated elements with mature themes. It exceeds expectations and delves into the challenges and pressures faced by a young hero. The talented voice cast, including Steven Yeun, Mark Hamill, and J. K. Simmons, adds to the show’s excellence.
With the guidance of Robert Kirkman, the animated world in this action-packed comic book adaptation is intricately crafted and realistic. Each week, a fresh array of heroes and villains are introduced, keeping viewers on their toes. And despite initial appearances, Invincible also features plenty of violence.

Smallville (2001-2017)
Synopsis: The series centers on Clark Kent’s life in the small rural town of Smallville, and also incorporates elements of a teen drama and a superhero story. Unlike previous film adaptations that primarily focused on Superman as an adult, Smallville delves into Clark’s teenage years and his journey towards becoming a superhero.
Our opinion: Although James Gunn’s Superman may be the latest adaptation of the Man of Steel, Smallville satisfied the hunger of Superman fans for many years. For younger audiences, this show may have been their first introduction to DC’s beloved hero and could have even influenced their expectations for future versions.

My Hero Academia (2016-present)
Synopsis: My Hero Academia chronicles the story of Izuku Midoriya, a powerless boy living in a society where having superhuman abilities is the norm. After being mentored by a renowned superhero, Izuku embarks on a journey to truly embody the qualities of a hero.
Our opinion: If you’re in search of superhero stories, it’s important to consider the offerings of anime. Even if you’re not well-versed in Shounen anime, there is much to admire. The intense battles, vibrant characters, and realistic character growth all contribute to making My Hero Academia not only a top-notch superhero show, but also one of the most highly-rated anime that should not be missed. It is undoubtedly among the best anime available on Crunchyroll.

4. A Look at The Boys (2019-present)
About the story: The Boys is set in a world where superheroes exist, but they are far from the perfect, heroic figures typically portrayed in comics. After Hughie Campbell’s girlfriend is accidentally killed by a reckless ‘Supe’, he becomes consumed with seeking revenge. He joins forces with Billy Butcher in his fight against the corrupt and powerful superhumans. However, as Hughie delves deeper into this battle, he uncovers a larger conspiracy at play. Our thoughts: If you are tired of the squeaky-clean, all-American superhero image, The Boys is the perfect antidote. Released in 2019, this series completely subverts the traditional superhero genre and injects chaos and violence into
Ultimately, The Boys aims to demonstrate that having narcissistic idols with formidable abilities would inevitably lead to disastrous consequences. The show’s heavy use of graphic violence and morally corrupt characters is a stark departure from what viewers were accustomed to. Fortunately, there is still ample opportunity to catch up before The Boys Season 4 airs.

3. Daredevil – 2015-2018
Synopsis: Matt Murdock is a well-regarded lawyer during the day, but at night he transforms into Daredevil, a ruthless vigilante. Determined to take down The Kingpin, the mastermind behind New York’s criminal empire, Matt will go to any lengths to achieve his goal.
Our perspective: When it became a part of the Marvel Netflix lineup, Daredevil was widely regarded as the top show. Even though the potential revival Daredevil: Born Again may not come to fruition, fans still hold the original series in high esteem as one of the greatest superhero shows in television history.
All of this is for good reason. The slick choreography, genuine character development, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of Kingpin make Daredevil the ultimate small-screen villain in modern Marvel adaptations. The show successfully blended action-packed thrills and legal drama, setting a high standard that subsequent TV shows of its kind have yet to surpass.

X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997)
What it’s about: Charles Xavier’s ultimate goal is to achieve peace between mutants and humans, and he is working on training a new generation of heroes to help make that vision a reality. The X-Men are a team of mutants who are dedicated to protecting both humans and their fellow mutants, often coming into conflict with other mutants who believe they are the rightful rulers of the world. What we think: X-Men: The Animated Series was a beloved show for many ’90s kids and remains a fan favorite to this day. With the recent announcement of X-Men ’97, fans of the original series are thrilled to have the opportunity to revisit their favorite characters and storylines in a new animated series.
It would be beneficial for more superheroes to receive the animated treatment. The depiction of our beloved Mutants using their powers to their full potential on-screen was greatly appreciated by fans, especially since the series stayed true to the cherished comic books. The most ideal way to watch X-Men: The Animated Series was by sitting on the floor on a Saturday morning, with one’s face just inches away from the TV screen.

Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995)
About: Gotham City is plagued by crime, and the only savior for its citizens is the legendary Batman. Opinion: The Batman fandom has consistently stood out with their exceptional depictions of their beloved hero. From the classic Adam West escapades to the brooding Bruce Wayne of today, Batman has been portrayed in various forms. With a Batman for every preference, perhaps none is as beloved as Batman: The Animated Series.
Despite being a show for kids, Batman TAS defied the norm by providing a unique sense of scale, artistry, and depth that other children’s shows lacked. Watching it was like experiencing a new grand-scale Batman movie every week. Its quality was recognized with critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards, throughout its run.
