The significance of weapons in video games should not be underestimated. Nowadays, most games allow players to use some type of tool to defeat enemies. Whether you are a powerful deity battling foes in your preferred RPG, a high-tech warrior shooting down aggressive extraterrestrial creatures, or a Pokemon trainer capturing unsuspecting creatures, it is through these “weapons”that you can engage with the game’s world.
Many of these items have achieved legendary status, making it appropriate to label them as iconic. However, amidst the constant stream of game releases and vast selection of lethal digital weapons at gamers’ disposal, it can be difficult to remember which ones truly stand out as the top contenders.
Since it’s Gamescom, we have chosen to create an electronic museum dedicated to these renowned weapons of war. (We are aware that not all of the items on this list are lethal, but “renowned weapons of war sometimes”doesn’t have the same impact.)
To achieve this, we have carefully examined the greatest games of all time, spanning from traditional platformers to first-person shooters and even fighting games, in order to compile a comprehensive list of the most impressive weapons in gaming history. Top 50 Weapons in Video Games: Lara Croft’s Dual Pistols (Tomb Raider)
Lara Croft’s signature Dual Pistols have been a staple in most Tomb Raider titles since 1996, when the first entry was released.
Reason for popularity: In multiple games, the dual pistols have been Lara’s go-to weapons, primarily for their ease of use rather than their strength. However, they made a significant impact in earlier games due to Tomb Raider’s pioneering aiming system, which proved effective against formidable foes such as the T-Rex.
Despite their unlimited ammo in Chronicles and Anniversary, the Dual Pistols have been reduced to a mere novelty in recent years. While they were once featured prominently in Tomb Raider (2013), they have since been relegated to a simple Easter egg with no mention in its sequels. Although they may still serve as an iconic symbol of the adventurer’s origins, they hold little significance in the current games.

The glaives have held a significant place in World of Warcraft since their introduction as the first legendary weapons. Once wielded by Illidan Stormrage, the Betrayer, these renowned green weapons have appeared in multiple Warcraft titles and hold great significance in the franchise’s lore. As a result, they are easily one of the most recognizable items in the game.

Our favorite aspect: Cappy has multiple uses, such as grabbing items and serving as a temporary platform for jumping. However, its most intriguing function is mind control. By possessing characters, players can control them and utilize their distinct abilities.
Cappy elevates the clothes power-up system in Super Mario Bros. 3 to a whole new level. Gone are the days of being limited to Mario’s comical costumes. With Cappy, players can now take control of various characters like Bullet Bill, Lakitu, a tank, a taxi, and even the formidable Bowser. This significantly broadens the range of gameplay possibilities, seamlessly integrating with the series’ natural progression.
One of the most memorable levels in the game is where you control the T-Rex. While it may seem like it was created specifically for promotional trailers, it remains a standout moment in one of the top Mario games.

Felo’melorn
Felo’melorn
What is it? Felo’melorn, also known as Flamestrike, is a legendary Highborne rune blade that has been passed down through the Sunstrider Dynasty. This immensely powerful magical weapon is heavily associated with fire mages.
We have a strong appreciation for Felo’melorn, one of the most iconic weapons in World of Warcraft. Its history is particularly fascinating, and its overwhelming strength made it a prominent Artifact weapon in Legion.
This fiery sword has appeared in numerous significant moments of Warcraft lore, thanks to its connections to renowned figures such as Dath’Remar Sunstrider and High King Anasterian Sunstrider.
The events surrounding the Scourge Invasion of Quel’Thalas are closely tied to the fate of Felo’melorn. During this invasion, Anasterian engaged in a fierce battle against Arthas and was successful in injuring his powerful steed, Invincible. However, Anasterian was ultimately defeated and Felo’melorn suffered a similar fate at the hands of Frostmourne. Thankfully, it was later recovered by Kael’thas who skillfully reforged it and wielded it against the Lich King. Unfortunately, Felo’melorn was lost in the icy terrain of Northrend.

ICA Briefcase in Hitman 2
The item in question is a briefcase that serves a dual purpose – it can be used to store and transport items discreetly, and it can also be wielded as a weapon when thrown.
As one of the most notable additions to Hitman 2 upon its release in 2018, the briefcase quickly became a favorite among fans. As the world’s top assassin, it proved to be an invaluable tool for smuggling large, illegal items into secure areas, making all the difference in completing missions successfully.
As a reminder, Hitman is fundamentally a comedy game. Even after repeatedly throwing a briefcase at someone’s head from a distance, it still remains humorous.
In addition, the well-known glitch known as the “Homing Briefcase”further exacerbated the situation by causing it to fly at a much slower pace than originally intended, resulting in some comical scenarios. What is it? Vergil’s Yamato serves as a perfect foil to the Rebellion, with its emphasis on precision, speed, and trickery. While it is primarily known for its ability to remain sheathed, this is due to its swift and deadly strikes that often eliminate enemies before they can even react.
What we appreciate about it: The DMC series was revitalized in its third installment due to Dante’s rivalry with his brother, Vergil. Their ultimate showdown was made even more spectacular by the Yamato’s incredibly swift, versatile, and deadly range of moves.
Additionally, with the introduction of future games that allowed you to wield the Yamato yourself, you came to realize that this sword felt even more satisfying in your own grasp.
The Yamato has solidified its place as one of the most iconic and influential swords in gaming, from its first appearance in DMC4 as a subtle nod to Nero’s relationship with Vergil, to Vergil’s dominating presence in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 meta and his impressive moves in DMC 4 and 5. Its significance and impact on the gaming world cannot be denied.

What makes it stand out: Throughout The Last of Us games, Ellie is skilled with a variety of weapons, but her initial pistol holds a significant role in her personal narrative. What are they? Apart from Kitana, there are other Mortal Kombat fighters who use the famous War Fans, which are typically seen as collapsible fans with sharp blades running between each rib. As secret characters, Jade and Khameleon also utilized these weapons in MKII and Trilogy, respectively. It is worth noting that the fans serve as Kitana’s main weapons for both close combat and long-range fighting.
One of the reasons we appreciate it is because Kitana, like all other characters in Mortal Kombat, skillfully wields her iconic weapon. The dual War Fans are particularly lethal when used at close range, as she rapidly slashes at her enemies before launching a fan toss that acts as a swift, spinning blade. Additionally, Kitana possesses a range of special moves that can inflict massive damage. The fact that game developers consistently find creative methods to showcase the fans in Fatalities deserves recognition.

37. The Needler in the Halo Video Game Series
What exactly is it? It refers to a weapon used by the Covenant faction in Halo, known for embedding explosive shards into living beings before detonating.
The Needler pistol, a legendary weapon in the Halo franchise, stands out for its unique design, powerful impact, and overall strangeness among the Covenant’s arsenal.
Despite not quite achieving the same level of realistic technology as Call of Duty, Halo’s UNSC weapons still have a believable connection to modern-day hardware.

F.L.U.D.D. (Super Mario Sunshine)
The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, also known as FLUDD, is a water-shooting backpack and AI companion used by Mario in Super Mario Sunshine and the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
Despite being considered the odd one out among the plumber’s 3D adventures, Super Mario Sunshine is actually a fantastic platformer with unique mechanics, most of which are thanks to the F.L.U.D.D. device.
E.Gadd, an eccentric inventor, created F.L.U.D.D. as a non-Poltergust brainchild to aid in cleaning up the polluted Isle Delfino. Despite its simple design, F.L.U.D.D. is a reliable companion and an essential tool. With its water-blasting mode and additional features such as hover, jet-propeller, and rocket nozzles, F.L.U.D.D. surpasses expectations and provides a range of power-ups. This innovative device revolutionized the concept of cleaning in gameplay, long before the popular game PowerWash Simulator, and within the beloved world of Nintendo.

Alan Wake’s flashlight is possibly the most formidable in all of literature, capable of illuminating and destroying the shadowy barriers shielding ominous dangers. It serves as your initial defense against the terrors that haunt your mind.
We appreciate the creative solution to a challenging issue in the Alan Wake games. With danger lurking in the dark in both Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2 (as well as the more colorful American Nightmare), it is crucial to have a reliable light source.
This ingenious approach effectively links narrative themes with gameplay mechanics and cleverly subverts the typical third-person shooter action. Instead of mindlessly using any weapon at hand to defeat enemies, the player must prioritize light, making Alan’s flashlight a crucial tool and one of our top favorite weapons in the gaming world.

Additionally, it reigned as one of the strongest weapons in the game once fully enhanced, effortlessly obliterating any adversary or mode of transportation with just a few well-timed wubs.

Bayonetta is a witch who possesses a variety of magical weapons. However, instead of traditional tools like a wand or a broom, she opted for two sets of dual-wielded pistols. If you’re curious about where she stores the second set, it’s cleverly hidden in her high heels.
One of the reasons we are fond of it is because of Bayonetta’s signature ballet of bullets, which is just as iconic as the character herself. Her killer heels symbolize her graceful yet deadly nature and are a delight to utilize in combat.
These four weapons offer an incredibly diverse range of moves, from traditional punches and kicks to unconventional techniques like shooting with her feet while doing a handstand and breakdancing.
It is rare to come across a game that offers a starting weapon of such high quality that you simply cannot part with it. However, Bayonetta’s pistols are exceptional and remain useful throughout all three main installments of the series.
There are not many games that offer the ability to clear a room by performing a pirouette with four pistols. Luckily, Bayonetta is one of the few that does.

Crucible (Doom)
What is it? The Crucible is a formidable energy weapon wielded by Doom Slayer in both Doom (2016) and its sequel, Doom Eternal (2020).
Why it appeals to us: The Crucible possesses a menacing appearance, emitting a fierce glow as a result of its crimson energy blade. In contrast to traditional weapons found in the game, it utilizes the untamed energy of Hell, rendering it exceptionally potent.
In the game, the weapon is used to execute lethal close-range attacks that have the potential to immediately eliminate even the strongest creatures. Its limited number of charges adds a tactical element, forcing players to carefully consider when and how to use it in critical situations.
Nevertheless, the Crucible enhances Doom’s demon-killing adventures with a beautiful touch of legend, making it all the more satisfying when he tears apart his enemies. This is all thanks to Doom’s push-forward gameplay and the powerful weaponry of the Doom Slayer.

Although the exact mechanics and inner workings of Poke Balls remain a mystery, they are indispensable for any trainer aspiring to be the very best (like no one ever was).

Kung Lao’s Hat (Mortal Kombat)
The razor-edged hat made its debut in Kung Lao’s first appearance in Mortal Kombat II in 1993. Not only does it complete his iconic appearance, but it also serves as his primary weapon, able to be thrown like a chakram.
What we appreciate: Kung Lao’s Hat Throw attacks have remained relatively straightforward since the days of Mortal Kombat II, but they have also evolved to include a buzzsaw-like move. The hat with razor-sharp edges is also prominently featured in Kung Lao’s most iconic Fatalities, as it effortlessly slices through enemies, cutting them into pieces and even transforming into a buzzsaw. The extent of Kung Lao’s control over the weapon remains unknown, but it always returns to him without fail.

Mozambique: The Connection Between Apex Legends and Titanfall
What is the significance? The majority of the weapons featured on this list are included due to their power or importance within their respective games. In the case of Apex Legends, the Mozambique stands out for its abysmal performance.
What we appreciate about it: In every Battle Royale, there are always a few weapons that we try to avoid at all costs. It’s a unique experience to land in a game and find yourself surrounded by the worst possible weapons, forcing you to choose the lesser of two evils.
Despite these situations, the Mozambique is often overlooked in favor of other choices. Sometimes, even hand-to-hand combat is preferred.
The Mozambique has always held a special place in my heart for its legendary reputation. Despite receiving several buffs, including the ability for players to wield it akimbo, this gun remains notoriously terrible.
It’s difficult not to develop a fondness for a weapon that consistently performs so poorly, especially when you manage to score a kill with it only occasionally.

Magnum (Halo)
Some fans believe Halo’s iconic Magnum pistol could make an appearance in Destiny 2.
A highly effective firearm from the game Halo, known for its ability to inflict significant damage when used with precision. It is especially deadly in the hands of a skilled player.
Why we appreciate it: In the early days of Halo, the Magnum was the weapon of choice in Combat Evolved. It acted as a compact DMR, capable of taking down an enemy in only three shots, leading to incredibly quick kills. While later versions may not have been as powerful, they still maintained the iconic look and satisfying impact of the pistol.
As time went on, the weapon’s legacy only grew, solidifying its place as one of Bungie’s most legendary weapons. This ultimately resulted in its inclusion as the Forerunner in Destiny’s 30th Anniversary. This reimagined Magnum is just as destructive as its predecessor, which defined a whole generation of FPS gaming.

What is it? The Blasphemous Blade is a powerful weapon found in Elden Ring, obtainable by defeating the boss Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. When wielded, this weapon has the ability to release a powerful blast of fire in the direction of the wielder, causing significant fire damage to any enemies in its path.
Reason for our preference: When playing a Soulslike game, the search for weapons to make gameplay smoother is constant. The Blasphemous blade is the perfect choice for this, as its fiery blast can inflict significant damage from both close and long distances.
Additionally, Blasphemous Blade is not only effective against bosses, but also against regular enemies. By utilizing Rykard’s Great Rune, you will even be able to heal with each defeated foe. This makes the weapon invaluable for future playthroughs, as it will continue to aid you in multiple NG+ cycles.

Reasons for our admiration: Golden Eye 007 holds a significant place in the first-person shooter genre. Despite its slightly outdated controls in today’s gaming world, it was a groundbreaking achievement in bringing the genre to consoles. All of this was accomplished using the unique Nintendo 64 controller as well.
The James Bond game included a collection of memorable guns that will elicit nostalgic feelings for those who enjoyed playing four-player split-screen in the past. Out of all the weapons, the Golden Gun stood out as the most iconic. This incredibly potent pistol had the ability to eliminate an opponent with just one shot. Of course, its magazine was small and its firing rate was slow, making it difficult to aim. However, with practice, one could dominate lobbies by quickly taking out their friends before they could retaliate.

Moonlight Greatsword from Dark Souls
What is it? This weapon is an iconic feature in the original Dark Souls, acquired by severing Seath the Scaleless’ tail. Throughout all of FromSoftware’s Souls games, this weapon has been adapted in various forms, but our main focus is on its appearance in the original Dark Souls.
Reasons for its popularity: The Moonlight Greatsword has become an essential weapon for intelligence builds in the original Dark Souls. This is because intelligence users, who primarily rely on casting spells, can face challenges when enemies successfully dodge their attacks. Moreover, in Dark Souls 1, spell usage is limited and can only be replenished by resting at a bonfire. However, the Moonlight Greatsword offers a solution to this issue as it can inflict significant magic damage on enemies, depending on the user’s intelligence level. Its ability to be used from a distance also allows players to maintain a safe distance from formidable bosses.
Furthermore, the Moonlight Greatsword’s projectile has the ability to penetrate through blocks. This allows the weapon’s beam to reach and damage enemies behind a block, making it useful for dealing chip damage. This feature proves advantageous when facing shielded bosses or in player versus player combat.

The Rebellion is Dante’s reliable sword that has appeared in every Devil May Cry game, except for the first one. Throughout the years, it has undergone various evolutions and upgrades.
What makes it stand out: The sword has consistently featured a bony, rib-cage-like design at its hilt, paired with an oversized blade. This combination of demonic symbolism and impracticality perfectly aligns with the series’ aim to be both edgy and captivating, drawing viewers in time and time again.
Taking into account Dante’s ever-changing arsenal throughout the DMC series, the continued presence of a steadfast weapon like the Rebellion only solidifies its reputation as a reliable and dependable choice. And of course, who could forget Dante’s iconic sword spin?

Whether or not you are a Call of Duty player, if you have been on the internet within the last 15 years, chances are you have come across the Intervention in some way.
What makes it so popular: The iconic sniper rifle from Modern Warfare 2 has inspired a whole generation of YouTubers. FaZe Clan and OpTic Gaming, among others, have thrived with this bolt-action weapon in their hands. Even years after its release, it remains a fan-favorite gun that is still discussed among players.
Additionally, if you were familiar with the MLG memes from the early 2010s, you would have undoubtedly witnessed the Intervention in action, swiftly taking down opponents. This gun is easily one of the most iconic weapons in the history of the most beloved FPS game, making it a necessary addition to this list.

Ray Gun (Call of Duty)
What is it? It is a Sci-fi energy weapon that is well known to every Call of Duty Zombies player.
What we appreciate about it: Long before jetpacks were introduced in Call of Duty, experienced players of the franchise had access to a formidable sci-fi weapon, the Ray Gun. First seen in World At War and featured in every Zombies mode since then, the Ray Gun continues to be the most iconic gun in the franchise.
The Ray Gun’s shots not only inflict a substantial amount of damage but also strike multiple targets, making it ideal for effortlessly wiping out hordes of zombies. When Pack-a-Punched, the Ray Gun becomes even more powerful, fully unleashing its potential as a formidable zombie-killing weapon. With its extensive history, it is highly likely that the Ray Gun will make an appearance in Black Ops 6 later this year, and we are eagerly anticipating its return.

As a symbol of his loyalty to the Greek Pantheon, Ares presented Kratos with the Blades of Chaos, which ultimately became a manifestation of his darkest self. For a period of time, the chains were seared into his flesh and the blades were wielded to unleash destruction upon Greece – ultimately leading to the downfall of the very gods that Kratos had once served.
Our appreciation for it stems from: The versatile nature of God of War’s chained blades, which serve as valuable tools for ranged attacks, close-quarters combat, and navigation. These blades have consistently played a crucial role in the success of the original games as a hack-and-slash experience.
Despite their slightly altered role in more recent games, Kratos’ signature weapons, the Blades of Chaos, continue to provide him with unstoppable momentum. With these blades in hand, he effortlessly slashes through enemies on the ground, then seamlessly transitions into midair to juggle them for devastating combos that can last for hundreds of hits. This iconic weapon has aided Kratos in his battles against numerous Norse Gods and monsters, much to the delight of long-time fans of the franchise.

13. Plasma Cutter (Dead Space)
What exactly is it? It is an engineering tool that has been transformed into a precise weapon for removing limbs, which has saved Isaac Clarke from the Necromorphs countless times.
Our appreciation for it: Instead of relying on the overused trope of ‘headshots deal extra damage’, Visceral chose to challenge the traditional way players were rewarded for their accurate aim in Dead Space.
Despite their gangly appearance, Necromorphs possess elongated limbs that are tipped with razor-sharp protrusions. They are not easily defeated with a single bullet to the head, but amputation is a viable option.
In Dead Space, you are constantly faced with reflexive decisions when encountering enemies, taking into consideration their threat level and visual danger cues. The game is essentially a puzzle, where you must strategically remove each enemy’s limbs one by one.

The Leviathan Axe, created by the dwarves Brok and Sindri, was intended to match the power of the legendary Mjölnir. Originally made for Kratos’ wife Faye, after her death, Kratos took up the axe as his main weapon during the Norse era in his role as the God of War.
Our admiration for it: The original trilogy of God of War showcases the Blades of Chaos, a legendary weapon in its own right. However, in God of War (2018), the Leviathan Axe is introduced, surpassing the Blades of Chaos in numerous ways and becoming an iconic weapon in its own right.
For gamers, the ultimate fantasy is being able to throw their weapon and have it return to them just like Thor’s hammer. Combined with the intense combat in God of War, this feature allows players to creatively approach enemies. Moreover, the DualShock controller enhances the experience by providing a tactile sensation every time the axe is retrieved with a satisfying thud.

The Blue Shell (Mario Kart)
The Blue Shell, which is featured in Mario Kart, is a notorious item. When used, it soars over the heads of racers and targets the player in first place, causing them to spin out and creating chaos and, at times, anger.
Since its introduction in 1996, the Blue Shell has earned a reputation as one of the most despised items in Mario Kart. Skilled racers have always dreaded its sudden appearance and have countless tales of being knocked from first place to last by this dreaded item, just moments before crossing the finish line.
Despite one’s attempts, it is impossible to completely escape one’s destiny, the devastating defeat that ensues, or the treachery of a companion exploiting it against you – all of which demonstrate the enduring notoriety and exasperating nature of the Blue Shell. Not all weapons are meant to physically eliminate one’s opponent; at times, it can be the most dreaded sight or the most advantageous tool at your disposal.

What is it? It is an iconic Exotic Rocket Launcher from Destiny that grants other rockets the ability to unleash devastating cluster missiles.
Our favorite: Which weapon is considered the most iconic in Destiny? Some may argue for Thorn, others for Last Word, and Ace of Spades is also a top contender. However, among these well-known Hand Cannons is a Rocket Launcher that has been a dominant force since the second week of Destiny 1 – Gjallarhorn.
Despite its powerful and distinctive impact, stylish design, and renowned history, Gjallarhorn embodies all the qualities of an Exotic weapon. It comes as no surprise that Bungie chose to reintroduce it for their 30th anniversary, as no other weapon captures the essence of Destiny quite like this one.

The Buster Sword is Cloud Strife’s iconic weapon in Final Fantasy VII, said to be passed down through generations of warriors. It is easily recognizable and often associated with Cloud in the Final Fantasy series due to its massive size and unique shape.

The BFG 9000, also known as the Big F***ing Gun, has been featured in numerous id Software games, but it is most recognized as a powerful weapon in Doom that fires green plasma projectiles. The gun was first introduced in Doom’s debut in 1993, and has since been included in every major release, including Doom 64.
Our admiration for the BFG stems from its immense power in the Doom series, capable of obliterating even the most formidable hordes of demons with its energy blasts. It is a reliable weapon during boss battles as well. The only downside is its slow rate of fire and limited availability of ammo. Nevertheless, having the BFG at hand is always a wise choice for the Doom Slayer, especially when faced with overwhelming demonic forces.

Hidden Blade in Assassin’s Creed
We have to admit, this unorthodox blade placement doesn’t make it look any less awesome.
The Hidden Blade, often utilized by the main characters in Assassin’s Creed, is concealed within a brace on the Assassin’s arm. It emerges through the space where their left ring finger once was, allowing them to eliminate their target discreetly and without detection.
Throughout its 17 years of existence, the Hidden Blade has remained an iconic and timeless piece of equipment in every Assassin’s Creed game. Despite its longevity, the weapon has undergone minimal changes, demonstrating the truth behind the saying, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ even for weapons from the 1500s (and earlier). This is why we continue to admire and appreciate the Hidden Blade.
