The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards: 12.12: The Day and Moving Win the Grand Prize, Exhuma Secures 4 Awards

The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards were held on May 7th in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

The hosts for this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards were Shin Dong-yeop, Suzy, and Park Bo-gum.

The evaluation standards for the 2021 Baeksang Arts Awards encompassed various forms of entertainment, such as terrestrial, cable, OTT, and web content, that were broadcast or released in Korea from April 1st of the previous year to March 31st of the current year. This also included feature films and plays that were released domestically during the same time frame.

The director of ‘12.12: The Day’, Kim Sung-soo, was awarded the Grand Prize in the film category. He expressed his gratitude by saying, “I am amazed. I was concerned when the movie premiered last year as the theaters were almost empty. However, I am thankful that many viewers came to watch it. I will show my gratitude by creating more entertaining and exceptional works in the future.”

In the category of TV, the Grand Prize was awarded to ‘Moving’. Lee Seung-won, the CEO of the production company, conveyed his gratitude in his acceptance speech, stating, “Creating ‘Moving’ was a challenging and demanding task for us. I am grateful to the dedicated actors who remained with us until the end, as well as to Disney+.”

MBC’s drama ‘My Dearest’ received the Best Drama award, while the Best Film award was given to ‘12.12: The Day.’

Jang Jae-hyun was awarded the Best Director prize in the film category for his work ‘Exhuma.’ In his acceptance speech, the director expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am humbled to be in the company of such talented individuals and I am thankful for this prestigious award. I will use this recognition as motivation to continue striving towards excellence.”

The Best Actor awards for films were given to both Hwang Jung-min for his role in ‘12.12: The Day’ and Kim Go-eun for her performance in ‘Exhuma.’

Hwang Jung-min revealed that he had relied on courage throughout the making of the film. He expressed his gratitude towards Director Kim Sung-soo for always encouraging him and acknowledging his hard work. Despite the challenging circumstances caused by the pandemic, he was thankful to the audience for their support and love for the movie. He humbly credited them for this achievement.

Kim Go-eun expressed her gratitude for receiving a precious award and thanked the director for entrusting her with the role. She also shared that the set of “Exhuma”was the most enjoyable part of the experience. Despite a difficult and painful year, she found the professional environment to be healing and enjoyable. She added that she always works with gratitude, but her time on the “Exhuma”set made her even more grateful for acting.

The winners of the Best Actor awards in the TV category were Namgoong Min for his performance in ‘My Dearest’ and Honey Lee for her role in the MBC drama ‘Knight Flower.’ In a statement, Namgoong Min expressed his joy at being able to attend the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’ and share his story, as he had previously only attended and left in the past.

Honey Lee expressed, “‘Knight Flower’ was a pivotal moment for me. I was required to perform wire stunts and handle a sword while flying over rooftops. It may have seemed insane to others, but I was captivated by the script and couldn’t resist.”She added, “It was an incredibly challenging experience. I swore off action dramas after that, but now I find myself torn about accepting this award.”

The TV category’s Variety Show award was given to Na Young-seok PD and Hong Jin-kyung. Meanwhile, Lee Jung-ha won the Rookie Award for TV, Yuna for ‘The Kidnapping Day,’ Lee Do-hyun for film, and Kim Hyung-seo (Bibi) for ‘Hopeless.’
