According to recent reports, the accuser in IU’s lawsuit did not appear for the first trial. Korean media has also disclosed the details and explanation for the accuser’s absence, providing further updates on the case.
On May 10, 2023, EDAM Entertainment issued an official statement stating that they would take strong legal action against any false accusations aimed at IU. Maeil Kyungjae reported that police authorities had revealed that an unknown person had filed a complaint against IU.
The allegations in the complaint stated that the artist had infringed on copyright law by plagiarizing six of their songs: “Good Day,””BBI BBI,””The Red Shoes,””Celebrity,””Boo,”and “Pitiful.”As a result, EDAM Entertainment was prompted to initiate legal action.
“The act of defaming the reputation of an artist through malicious posts and groundless information is illegal. These criminal acts are punishable by law. The company aims to take strong legal action without hesitation against these actions that attack our artist’s character.”
“The instigators of malicious information will be tracked down and we will do everything we can to protect our artist’s rights. No leniency or settlement will be present during this legal process.”
“We kindly ask fans for their cooperation by sending any posts or rumors that infringe our artist’s rights in our official email.”
On September 4, 2023, EDAM Entertainment announced the dismissal of the criminal allegations. The company reiterated that IU was not involved in the composition of the songs. However, the lawsuit against the accuser remained ongoing.
“In conclusion, the criminal accusations against our artist were dismissed by the investigative agency earlier on August 24. The decision was made on the grounds that it did not constitute a crime, and we received the investigation results on August 30.”
“Our artist never participated during the composition of the five songs mentioned in the allegation, including the one song the accuser took issue with. Since the artist didn’t take part, she cannot be a party to a dispute revolving around copyright infringement.”
On July 24, the Seoul Central District Court conducted the initial trial for the lawsuit, with IU’s legal representative present. However, sources reported that the plaintiff did not appear in court, and no legal representative appeared on their behalf.
Recent reports have disclosed that IU’s attorney had made a formal request for the personal details of “Mr. A,”the accuser who is reportedly living in the United States. Subsequent investigations have confirmed that the court approved the request and that it is expected to take approximately three to four months for the information to be processed.
The court commented that a new trial would be conducted once the personal information of the accuser had been verified and confirmed.
