Just one day after Girls’ Generation Yuri’s photo on the breakwater sparked controversy, the Disney+ drama “Red Swan”is now facing similar backlash.
In the latest installment of “Red Swan,”which premiered on July 25th, a member of the Fine Group’s security team secretly captures photos of Kim Ha-neul and Jung Ji-hoon on the breakwater (Tetrapod). She carefully sneaks in to document their affair, then swiftly retreats to avoid being caught.
The tetrapod is a structure designed to protect coastlines from tides and storm surges by absorbing wave energy. It typically consists of four horn-shaped legs, with a common diameter of 4 to 5 meters. These structures are usually stacked in 1 to 4 layers, with a gap depth equivalent to the height of a 2nd to 3rd floor apartment. Falling onto a tetrapod can result in serious injury, such as fractures or even death if one’s head is hit. The slippery surfaces caused by water or moss make it difficult for a person to climb out on their own. Additionally, the lack of handholds or footholds on the structure makes it nearly impossible to escape without assistance. The loud sound of
The Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has reported a total of 462 breakwater-related accidents in the past six years, resulting in 65 deaths. In order to prevent further tragedies, the Port Act has implemented a fine of up to 1 million won for individuals who enter designated large ports and accident-prone areas.
Despite being a dangerous filming location, the lack of awareness shown by “Red Swan”has received significant criticism. While only one actress was shown climbing on the breakwater in the scene, it is likely that multiple staff members were also present on the breakwater to film her. In particular, the female bodyguard was filmed behind the breakwater with Jung Ji-hoon and Kim Ha-neul passing in front of her, indicating that many staff members were present within the Tetrapod.
It is important to acknowledge that unforeseen accidents can occur, especially in the filming industry where performers are often put in risky environments and may not receive proper consideration from the production staff, resulting in tragic outcomes, including loss of life.
