Fans of Netflix’s The Atypical Family have been drawing parallels to the movie Parasite since the introduction of the enigmatic character, Da-hae.
The film Parasite served as the catalyst that propelled South Korean entertainment into the mainstream of Hollywood. This Academy Award-winning movie tells the story of a struggling family’s quest for a better life by infiltrating a wealthy household.
Fans have noticed striking similarities between Netflix’s The Atypical Family and the movie that seem to have inspired it. This is evident from the reveal of Da-hae’s true intentions for the Bok family.
A fan on X/Twitter expressed that they were intrigued by the plot, comparing it to a mix of Parasite’s family dynamics and supernatural elements.

A fan has also expressed their thoughts on the first episode of #ATypicalFamily, stating that it was a mix of both boring and interesting moments. However, they found the premise to be intriguing enough to continue watching the succeeding episodes. They also mentioned that the show gave them Parasite vibes and praised the leads and the director, who previously worked on Snowdrop.
“The background of FL and her family reminded me of Parasite. It was unexpected, but I am intrigued to see where the story will lead,”commented another fan on Reddit.
In the K-drama, the Bok family is portrayed as very wealthy and holds a significant secret. Each family member possesses unique superpowers, ranging from flight to precognition and time travel. However, they all eventually vanish due to everyday struggles such as sleeplessness, obesity, mental health issues, and excessive phone use.
As Dae-hae rescues Bok Gwi-joo from the ocean, his mother becomes intrigued by her. She sees her as a potential solution to help her son overcome his depression and move on from his late wife. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that Da-hea’s interest is not just a coincidence.
In Episode 1, it is disclosed that she and her “family” are involved in a scam with the Bok family. They have already started to gain their trust, with Da-hae strategically marrying Gwi-joo and exploiting their wealth.
The scheme started with Da-hae intentionally securing Gwi-joo’s mother as a client at the spa where she was employed. In addition, her “sister”falsified her credentials to become a personal trainer at Gwi-joo’s gym, while their “brother”was also keeping a close watch on the family.
It was also disclosed that Da-hae has a history of manipulating her partners. Her previous marriage ended in divorce after she orchestrated a long con, falsely accusing her husband of cheating with her “sister.”In her second marriage, she fabricated a story about being hit with a wine bottle in order to prove her husband’s alleged abuse in court.
The Kim family infiltrates the Park family in Parasite, beginning with the eldest son pretending to be a tutor for their teenage daughter. Following this, his sister assumes the role of a teacher for their son, and eventually, their parents take on the roles of the family’s driver and housekeeper.
The Kim family was motivated by desperation to improve their lives, even if it resulted in chaos, while Do-hae’s family has a history of intentionally deceiving others for their own gain.
As Gwi-joo falls in love, how far will Da-hae’s con go? The Atypical Family is available for streaming on Netflix, and there are other May K-dramas you can watch as well.
