Matt Reeves has recently addressed the delay of The Batman 2, confirming that while the sequel is now slated for a 2027 release, production is set to commence later this year. The anticipation surrounding the film has grown significantly, especially since Robert Pattinson first donned the cowl in 2022. With nearly three years since the original film’s debut, fans are eager for the next installment.
Originally scheduled for October 2025, the release date of The Batman 2 has faced multiple postponements, first moving to 2026 and then finally being rescheduled for October 2027. This five-year interval has sparked discussions among fans and critics alike. Notably, James Gunn has come to the film’s defense, citing other successful franchises, such as Alien and Avatar, which experienced even longer gaps between sequels.
Reasons Behind the Delay
Speculations regarding the film’s delay have circulated, with some fans questioning if Pattinson will also portray Batman in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) films. Others have suggested that Reeves may have encountered personal challenges that influenced the script’s development. Recent comments from Reeves seem to support the latter notion.
In an interview with THR at the Golden Globes, Reeves shared insights on the screenplay’s progress: “We’re still finishing the script, and there have been so many things going on.” He expressed enthusiasm for the impending production, stating, “This next year is about getting into production and getting the movie going, and we’re really excited about it.”

Reeves hinted at personal issues affecting the film’s timeline, remarking on the support he has received from his colleague Colin Farrell during the challenging times. He emphasized, “There’s been a lot of stuff going on in my life in the last year or so.” Despite the delays, Reeves remains committed to the project and is eager to reunite the cast and welcome new members.
“What I’m excited about is I feel like we’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something that I hope people are going to be really surprised by,” Reeves stated, underscoring his creative vision for the sequel.
Conflicting reports have emerged concerning the film’s development, particularly regarding the status of the script. James Gunn clarified on Threads that the primary reason for the delay is simply the lack of a completed screenplay. He stated, “Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting, and post-production on big films.”
The journey to The Batman 2 may be longer than anticipated, but the dedication shown by Reeves and his team reflects a commitment to delivering a product that will resonate with audiences. As the film progresses towards its eventual release, fans will undoubtedly continue to hold onto their excitement for the next chapter in Gotham’s saga.
