The Batman 2 Director Dismisses Possibility of a “Fantastical” Sequel

Despite being inspired by a comic book character in an imaginative universe, The Batman 2 director Matt Reeves stated that his forthcoming sequel will steer clear of extraordinary elements.

One of the most eagerly awaited projects in the DC franchise is undoubtedly The Batman 2, the continuation of Reeves’ 2022 superhero film.

This film is not part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reimagined DC universe, suggesting it may serve as the grand conclusion for Robert Pattinson’s introspective interpretation of the iconic caped crusader.

Reeves has kept details about the film’s plot under wraps, but he has confirmed that the sequel will not delve into outrageous campiness, stating to Readly, “We might push to the edge of the fantastical but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.”

He emphasized the significance of finding a way to portray these iconic characters so that Gotham resembles a place in our real world.

However, he clarified that this approach “doesn’t mean that [audiences] won’t see characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do.”

Reeves cited one Batman villain as an example of a character that could disrupt the established reality of his films.

“Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed a bit too far for us to be able to find a way to do,” Reeves mentioned. “But there is a fun way to think about how we would adapt characters that might venture a bit into the fantastical and find a way to make sense of that.”

While this type of paranormal concept may not align with Reeves’ vision for Batman, he has demonstrated a willingness to incorporate unique elements from Gotham City’s lore.

One notable example is the portrayal of mob boss The Penguin, who, in Reeves’ interpretation, has a disfigured face that evokes the appearance of the flightless bird, a departure from the comic’s exaggerated version with features like flippers for hands.

Fans can look forward to how the director will merge fantastical elements with realism when The Batman 2 premieres in theaters on October 2, 2026.
