Antony Starr, star of The Boys, has publicly ridiculed fans who persist in comparing his true persona to that of his character Homelander on the show.
The fourth season of The Boys has effectively reinforced the notion that Homelander, the main antagonist, is a morally flawed individual.
Despite his cruel behavior and brutal tendencies, Homelander has still managed to garner a devoted fan base, with some viewers even confusing the character with Antony Starr, the talented actor who portrays him.
Despite assumptions, Starr is not pleased with being compared to Homelander. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he states, “People are often shocked when they realize I am not like him. But why would I want to be compared to a psychopathic narcissist? So thank you for not seeing me that way.”
Starr also remembered instances on set where he was treated similarly to Homelander by his fellow co-stars and crew members, who would run away from him while he was in costume.
Despite this, the actor has disclosed that he takes extra measures to distinguish himself from Homelander. This includes wearing tinted sunglasses during interviews to conceal his blue eyes and shaving his head at the end of each season of the show.
Starr has previously spoken out about The Boys fans’ tendency to idolize Homelander. In May, he criticized members of this group for “completely missing the point”when it comes to understanding his character’s motivations.
Despite the admiration for his villainous take on Superman, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke seems unsure of how to respond to those who see Homelander as a hero. In an interview with Slash Film, Kripke expressed his confusion, stating, “If you happen to view Homelander as a hero, I’m not sure how to address that. But if viewers choose to watch the show purely for entertainment purposes, like any other superhero series…then I suppose I should say thank you for tuning in?”
Kripke shrugged, “It’s not a big deal to me. I just don’t know what else to do about it. The show has many qualities, but subtlety is not one of them.”
