A theory has been proposed by a fan that Hughie’s mom, who has already been deemed the most unsympathetic character in The Boys, could potentially be a shapeshifter according to fan speculation.
Daphne Campbell’s unexpected appearance in The Boys Season 4 was a significant shock, as she had only been mentioned in the past. She had left their family when Hughie was young.
This resulted in a discussion on The Boys’ subreddit, sparked by a Reddit post, where fans expressed their lack of interest in Daphne. However, one fan made a clever suggestion that took into consideration the numerous leaks of Season 4.

One Reddit fan theory suggests Hughie’s mom is more than she seems.
DemocraticEjaculate suggested, “What if the shapeshifter in the trailer turns out to be his mom instead of a doppelgänger? I also believe that the super will be used to frame Starlight.”
The Starlight impersonator is alluding to a potential previous leak that implied Hughie would be deceived into proposing to and having a physical relationship with a shapeshifter posing as Starlight.
The leaked information implies that in The Boys, there will be a shapeshifter who will transform into various individuals and ultimately take on the identity of Starlight. If this speculation is accurate, it is possible that Daphne is a shapeshifter who is using this disguise to get closer to Hughie.
It is uncertain what the future holds for Daphne and her relationship with Hughie. The choice she made to administer Compound V to the brain-dead Hugh resulted in tragic outcomes, as he now possesses superpowers but also suffers from dementia.
As a result, Hughie was forced to euthanize his father in Episode 5 in order to prevent any further harm caused by his newfound superpowers. Although Hughie and Daphne appeared to find some closure during Hugh’s hospitalization, the weight of his death is bound to have a significant impact on them.
Naturally, this assumes that the person claiming to be Daphne is indeed the real Daphne and not a shapeshifter, as the theory proposes. As Season 5 unfolds, fans will have to patiently wait and see if Daphne truly is who she claims to be.
