The Boys season 4: date, teasers, casting, plot: everything you need to know

The Boys season is coming: here’s everything you need to know, from its release date to the cast, plot and more.

In 2019, Avengers: Endgame had just made history by becoming the greatest superhero film of all time, Spider-Man: Far From Home had left spectators in suspense with incredible suspense, and the cinematic universe of DC was still in the midst of controversy surrounding the Snyder Cut.

That’s when The Boys launched its first season, introducing a new class of cynical and bloody series, depicting superheroes as narcissistic, fanatical lunatics. The series was quickly entitled to a second season, and as Amazon had anticipated, it quickly acquired worldwide fame.

Since its debut, The Boys has continued to see its audience grow, and the third season may well be its best chapter yet. Fortunately for fans, the story is far from over, especially after Gen V, its spin-off. Plot, casting, release window: here’s everything we’ve learned so far about season 4 of The Boys.

Summary

Is there a release date for The Boys season 4?

Season 4 of The Boys will premiere on Prime Video on June 13, 2024.

The release window was first confirmed with the first two posters of the new season, which you can check out below:

Its renewal was first reported by Deadline on June 10, 2022, a week after the release of season 3 on Prime Video. According to figures shared by the platform, the global audience for The Boys increased by 17% compared to season 1, and therefore had an incredible jump of 234% compared to season 2.

In an interview with Collider before production began on season 4 of The Boys, actor Karl Urban said: “I’m coming back, I’m getting back into Butcher’s shoes, and I can’t wait. They’re a fun team to play with, we work hard and play hard, and I can’t wait to see where they take the characters.”

When speaking to ComicBook about how Stella is adjusting to the Boys, actress Erin Moriarty didn’t reveal too much, specifying: “Oh my God, okay, I’m sorry, it’s just, maybe it’s just good publicity for season 4, that I can’t answer this with my composure. I can’t! No, that’s a sincere answer! I’m really afraid to answer… She’s adapting really well.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, filming for season 4 of The Boys would have been completed in April 2023.

Is there a trailer for The Boys season 4?

Yes, the first real trailer was released in December, offering a glimpse of the superheroes who will be present (including a few newcomers). You can watch it below:

A fake campaign ad had already been released to tease the upcoming plot of season 4, which you can see here:

“This is a dark day for America. But together we can protect the freedom of an innocent hero. This is CEO Ashley Barrett on Homelander.”

The video features Vought CEO Ashley Barrett saying that Homelander is now on trial for murdering a civilian protester at the very end of last season. She proclaims her innocence, making a satirical joke about the American legal system, and implores viewers to tweet #HomeFree, which will undoubtedly be a way to generate excitement for season 4.

We will update this space when a full trailer is shared online. In the meantime, you can take a look at the Season 3 bloopers:

The Boys season 4 cast: who is returning, and are there any new characters?

Remember: when it comes to The Boys and who will survive or die, all bets are off. Nonetheless, with Season 3 coming to an end, there are a few faces we can expect to see back in the Season 4 cast, including:

  • Karl Urban as Butcher
  • Jack Quaid as Hughie
  • Laz Alonso as MM
  • Tomer Capone as Frenchie
  • Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko
  • Erin Moriarty as Annie January/Stella
  • Antony Starr as Homelander
  • Chace Crawford as The Deep
  • Dominique McElligott as Maggie Shaw/Queen Maeve
  • Jessie T. Usher as A-Train
  • Cameron Crovetti as Ryan
  • Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett
  • Claudia Doumit as Victoria Neuman

Jensen Ackles is also expected to return as Soldier Boy. Showrunner Eric Kripke previously told Entertainment Tonight: “The adage of television is that you never kill anyone unless you absolutely have to. Never close a door, open a window instead. We’ll all have to wait and see, but I can’t imagine the series ending without Soldier Boy making another appearance.”

Black Noir, played by Nathan Mitchell, was killed in the season 3 finale, with Homelander tearing his insides out after he refused to tell him about Soldier Boy. Both the latter and Maeve are presumed dead in the public eye, while the former is locked up by the government, while the latter now lives off the grid with her partner.

Cameron Crovetti, who plays Homelander’s son Ryan, has been promoted to series regular for season 4. There will also be a few new hires with Firecracker, played by Valorie Curry, and Sister Sage, played by Susan Heyward – neither two having no known origins in the comics.

And, according to Deadline, The Boys is welcoming another new kid: Jeffrey Dean Morgan has officially joined the season 4 cast as a recurring guest star.

In an interview with E! News, Eric Kripke said: “Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a superfan of the show, so he and I are talking. We’re trying to figure out something for season 4. Nothing finalized yet, but we’re exchanging emails to see if we can make it work with his busy schedule. So stay tuned on that.”

Prime Video has shared two photos from the upcoming season of The Boys – showing two new characters in their full costumes. Susan Heyward in the role of Sister Sage and Valorie Curry in that of Firecracker both display their own style. According to The Boys’ official Twitter/X account, Sage is “already a thousand steps ahead of you,” while “Firecracker has a short fuse.”

Simon Pegg will return as Hugh Campbell Senior, after appearing in only five episodes of season 1 before finally disappearing in season 2, and reappearing in the first episode of season 3.

He will be joined by Black Mirror star Rosemarie DeWitt as Hughie’s mother, a character who has never been seen on the series until now. Supernatural’s Rob Benedict and Once Upon a Time’s Elliot Knight have also joined the cast in as-yet-undisclosed roles.

And then there are the stars of Gen V. We know Maddie Phillips and Asa Germann will eventually be able to reprise their roles as Cate and Sam respectively, given the events of the spinoff, but there’s no word on whether we’ll see Jaz Sinclair (Marie), Chance Perdomo (Andre), Lizze Broadway (Emma), Derek Luh and London Thor (both playing Jordan).

The Boys season 4 storyline: what will the plot be?

While there’s no official synopsis at the moment, Eric Kripke gave some hints about what to expect, telling Collider: “In the future, Ryan is going to be really important. Both Butcher and Homelander have very good reasons to fight for him, because the stakes couldn’t be higher.”

“If Ryan goes the way of Homelander and then there are two Homelanders in the world, it would be a nightmare for the planet. If Butcher can bring Ryan into the light, then he’ll probably be the best weapon they can hope to have against Homelander. This has always been a show about family, and a lot of season 3 was about fathers, so it makes sense to me that season 4 is about sons.”

As seen in the teaser video, it seems that in season 4, Homelander will be tried for killing a civilian protester at the very end of season 3. But he could be released without punishment, and thus still remain the captain of the Seven at home. Vought.

Antony Starr, the interpreter of Homelander, promised that things will get even stranger in the next chapter. Speaking to Variety, he said the superhero series is “getting weirder and weirder,” adding that he was filming a scene for season 4 that almost made him question himself: “I was watching the person in front of me, and I said to myself: “What are we doing? I can’t believe this! I could have done anything else with my life, but here I am doing this?” It was honestly the weirdest thing that ever happened to me.”

In a recent interview with Collider, Simon Pegg said: “You know how crazy The Boys is? It’s going to get even crazier. I had so much fun in this series. It was great to come back and play Hugh Senior. I love Jack [Quaid]. It was great working with Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays Hughie’s mother and is returning. It’s going to be awesome. You will love. I appear in about four episodes, and it was a pleasure to come back. It’s a great team. They are incredible people, and this series is completely crazy!”

What are the links between Gen V and season 4 of The Boys?

In an interview with Variety, Eric Kripke also confirmed the timeline between Gen V and season 4 of The Boys. “In our minds, this takes place only a few days after the events of Gen V. We’re trying to keep the timeline super simple because this whole timeline thing folding in on itself (…) is just confusing to me as a spectator,” he explained.

“There’s season 3 of The Boys, and then Gen V, and then season 4 of The Boys. And after that, Gen V season 2 will happen. It’s more like train carriages than a plate of spaghetti.”
