Can you imagine waking up one day to find that Homelander is your President? Exactly! No one wants to even consider that possibility.
During Robert Singer’s successful election, Homelander and Sister Sage planned to assassinate the current US president and utilize the 25th Amendment to install Victoria Neuman as his replacement. Homelander’s intention was for Neuman to act as his puppet in the White House.
Despite Billy Butcher murdering Neuman, it seems like this strategy may still have a chance. Sage demonstrates wisdom by choosing not to expose her plan, and as The Boys season 4 comes to an end, Senator Calhoun surprisingly rises to become President Calhoun.
1. Homelander As President By The End of The Boys Season 4
Calhoun woke up on the day of The Boys season 4 finale with no inkling that he would become president by sundown. However, during the meeting at Tek Knight’s house, he made a crucial decision to pledge his loyalty to Homelander.
Calhoun recognizes that aligning himself with Homelander will bring financial gain, while opposing Homelander could have negative effects on his well-being. As a result, he is completely subservient to Homelander’s every desire due to the combination of these two motivating factors.
The first instance of this is shown when Homelander dismisses Calhoun during his speech, followed by Calhoun promptly contacting Homelander about Soldier Boy.
Despite being the figurehead president, Calhoun is still responsible for posing for photos, signing documents, and attending meetings. However, Homelander, who has taken over as the true premier of the United States in The Boys season 4, holds significantly more political power than he would have if the original plan to install Neuman into the White House had been successful.
Despite the possibility of being vulnerable to blackmail and threats, Neuman never willingly collaborated with Homelander. She was determined to not let him control her and possessed the intelligence to resist him. However, none of these concerns apply to Calhoun.
Neuman could never be the exact type of puppet that Homelander desired, as she was held up by strings that were much easier to manipulate.
While Homelander may not have his feet on the desk in the Oval Office, he still maintains absolute control over the USA.
Will Homelander Become President in Season 5?
Although Sister Sage refers to Calhoun as a “patsy,”his services may not be required in the future. His appointment allows Homelander and Sage’s takeover to proceed with little resistance, and it adds a sense of credibility to Vought’s new government from an external perspective.
Without raising concerns about the democratic legitimacy of the appointment, Homelander would not have been able to directly take Robert Singer’s job.
Despite this, the transition from President Calhoun to President Homelander becomes significantly smoother after Calhoun appoints Homelander to an official position in the United States government.
In The Boys season 5, it is possible that the entire facade will be removed, either during the season or in the time between seasons. Homelander will be officially and legally inaugurated as Calhoun’s successor and the next US president. In fact, Sage may have been referring to this “phase 2″in The Boys Season 4 finale.
3. The Adaptation of Homelander’s Comic Story in The Boys Season 4
Although Homelander’s power grab in The Boys season 4 does not exactly mirror Garth Ennis’ comic plot, it does follow the general pattern of the original material. Similar to the original version, Homelander assembles a group of superheroes and forcefully seizes control of the White House, ultimately killing then-President Victor Neuman himself.
In Amazon’s The Boys TV show, Homelander’s army, Neuman’s death, and Homelander’s coup are all depicted, but the live-action adaptation is more subdued. Despite this, Antony Starr’s character still gains control of the United States, but it is Senator Calhoun and Sister Sage’s master plan that makes the onscreen takeover more believable.
Intriguingly, The Boys season 5 is faced with the challenge of dramatically deviating from the comic book storyline. In the comics, Homelander’s actions lead to the killing of the president, resulting in a confrontation with his clone Black Noir and ultimately leading to his bloody downfall as president.
It can be inferred that season 5 of Amazon’s The Boys will feature Homelander ruling over his kingdom, as the story has progressed beyond the possibility of the comic book’s clone twist.
4. What is the climax of The Boys Season 4?
The season 4 finale of The Boys is packed with important events, as the ending significantly heightens the tension for the show’s fifth and ultimate season. After the team’s shocking encounter with a shapeshifter in episode 7, the squad successfully exposes and defeats the fake Starlight in episode 8.
Despite Homelander and Sage’s efforts to save Robert Singer’s life, the presidential candidate is ultimately defeated. Their plan to take over the White House is successful after Singer is revealed to have assassinated Victoria Neuman.
It should be noted that Singer was not directly responsible for Neuman’s death. In the finale, a tragic event involving Ryan leads Butcher to give in to his darker impulses and fully embrace his superhuman abilities, represented by the devil on his shoulder.
The conclusion of The Boys season 4 takes a dark turn as Butcher utilizes his new power to eliminate Neuman. This unintentionally aligns with Sage and Homelander’s plans, ultimately granting them control of the White House.
