The Boys Season 4 is a flop on Rotten Tomatoes and fans think they know why

Despite receiving the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the series’ history, fans of The Boys Season 4 are confident that the show itself is not to blame.

Despite its strong track record of positive reviews from both critics and fans, The Boys does not seem to be receiving the same luck with its fourth season. Currently, the show maintains a 95% Tomatometer rating, but its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is only at 52% as of this writing.

This is the first instance where the series has received such a low audience score, with the ratings for Seasons 1, 2, and 3 being 90%, 83%, and 75%, respectively.

Many followers of The Boys’ subreddit also noticed this trend, with several expressing concern over the show’s heavy emphasis on supporting characters.

One fan expressed their dislike for the Hughie, Frenchie, Kimiko, and Starlight plot lines, stating that they were not invested in those storylines. However, they found the Homelander, Butcher, Ryan, Vicky, and Sage plotline to be more engaging and enjoyable.

A different fan expressed their thoughts on the current state of the show, stating that the superhero theme has taken a backseat to the Homelander vs Starlight conflict. They noted that the conflict only involves a small group of individuals on each side, making it feel more like a football fight between Milwall and Leeds rather than a political uprising of the left and right.

It should be acknowledged that the low score of The Boys Season 4 could potentially be attributed to a deliberate campaign of review bombing. Numerous reviews suggest that the show has veered too far from its original source material and has been influenced by external pressures.

The Boys has consistently pushed boundaries in its commentary on current political issues, and the current storyline, which pits Homelander fans against Starlight supporters, has caused some viewers to question if they have been the target of the show’s satire all along. This was further highlighted by showrunner Eric Kripke’s pointed remarks in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

During the interview, Kripke expressed his thoughts on the show’s fans, stating that those who didn’t agree with its viewpoint were free to “find something else to watch.”

“There are some viewers who consider Homelander to be the hero of the show. How do you respond to that? The show covers a variety of themes, but subtlety is not one of them. If that is the interpretation you take away from it, I am at a loss.”

Despite currently having a lower Rotten score, The Boys Season 4 has the potential to increase its rating as the final five episodes have yet to be released. With ample time left for the show to win over viewers and end on a high note, this season is expected to build momentum for the highly anticipated Season 5.
