The Boys: Showrunner Shares How an Oscar Winner Voiced an Octopus

One of the most unexpected revelations of The Boys Season 4 could be the reappearance of Ambrosius and the subtle voice cameo from an Academy Award-winning actor. Showrunner Eric Kripke has now shared the story behind how the cameo was arranged.

The fourth season of The Boys features the reappearance of Ambrosius, the Octopus who was taken on as a romantic partner by The Deep in the controversial Herogasm episode of Season 3.

In addition to hiding in The Deep’s closet, Ambrosius can now be heard for the first time by viewers as she communicates telepathically with The Deep.

If her voice sounded familiar, it’s because it’s provided by Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton.

In an interview with Variety, showrunner Eric Kripke disclosed that Swinton’s appearance in the show was simply a nod to the actor’s sense of humor.

Kripke explained that when the writers’ room decided to include Ambrosius as a character this year, they knew they needed the best British actress they could find. They immediately thought of Dame Judi Dench, but unfortunately, she was unavailable. This left the writers with a short list of options.

“Upon contacting Tilda, she displayed admirable character by agreeing to participate in the venture despite not knowing any of those involved. With a lighthearted attitude, she stated, ‘That sounds hilarious, count me in,’ and fulfilled her commitment.”

Swinton’s portrayal of Ambrosius is just one of the many notable appearances in The Boys Season 4, with Will Ferrell making a cameo as himself and taking on the lead role in A-Train’s dark new movie.

As usual, there is an abundance of cameos from Kripke’s other works, including the return of Jim Beavers as “Dakota”Bob Singer and a particularly unsettling rendition of Human Centipede by Rob Benedict.

Despite the show’s suggestion, it is possible that Swinton’s character will not remain in the series for long. The Deep has a history of unsuccessful relationships with both human and non-human beings.

There are already indications of conflict brewing between Ambrosius and him, as she was recently seen scolding him for neglecting to clean her tank. As the season intensifies the drama, tension, and stakes at a rapid pace, it remains uncertain what gruesome destiny awaits Ambrosius in The Boys Season 4.
