As the excitement for the second season of Severance grows, it has been disclosed that the budget for the upcoming chapter makes it one of the costliest television productions.
It has seemed like a long time since we eagerly awaited the return of Ben Stiller’s Apple TV+ drama. We are eagerly anticipating Severance Season 2, which will hopefully provide answers to our lingering questions.
Despite the fact that we won’t be receiving new episodes until January 2025, there is an end in sight. A recent report from Bloomberg has disclosed that the cost of the second chapter has risen to over $20 million per episode.
This comparison shows that the dystopian workplace drama is in the same category as House of the Dragon, with both having similar production costs. Meanwhile, the estimated cost per episode for Star Wars’ The Mandalorian and The Last of Us series is $15 million.
Despite the potential positive implications for the quality of the content, the future of the show does not seem promising as Apple plans to decrease its budget for the streaming service, according to information from multiple sources.
Apple is investing billions of dollars in high-quality content, including Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and a sequel to the popular Band of Brothers series, titled Masters of the Air.
Similarly to these titles, its original series, such as Slow Horses, The Morning Show, and Severance, are still receiving positive reviews and accolades – however, they are not attracting a sufficient audience.
According to Bloomberg, Apple TV+ produces a lower amount of viewership in a month compared to Netflix’s daily viewership.
Despite facing delays due to writers’ and actors’ strikes, Season 2 of Severance experienced an increase in costs.
According to insiders, Apple paid House of Cards writer Beau Willimon millions to assist with a few episodes, similar to the arrangement made for Stiller to continue working on the project.
Discussions regarding the future of Severance are currently ongoing. The encouraging update is that Apple is fully committed to producing more episodes of the popular series. However, according to sources, Stiller and Fifth Season, the studio behind the show, have been requested by management to decrease the production expenses.
The announcement has caused fans to become cautious, as one user commented on Reddit stating, “This news is based on a report stating that Apple is aiming to make more strategic investments in their TV and film projects.”
“Hopefully, Season 3 of Severance will not face any additional [global shutdowns] or strikes. However, I am now less confident about the possibility of a fourth season. The performance of Season 2 will ultimately determine its fate.”
“Another individual expressed their nervousness, stating “Oh boy this makes me nervous,”while a third person concurred, saying “Yup, same.”They shared their concern about the possibility of their favorite Netflix show, Mindhunter, being canceled due to excessive spending like this. They hoped that a similar situation would not occur here.”
Mark your calendars for January 17, 2025, as that is when the highly anticipated second season of Severance will debut. In the meantime, be sure to stay updated on the latest streaming releases for this month and discover the top binge-worthy series and their streaming platforms.
