The Darwin Incident manga receives anime adaptation

The official X handle for TOHO animation announced on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 that Shun Umezawa’s The Darwin Incident manga will be adapted into a TV anime. To promote the anime, a new X account has been opened to share a teaser visual, as well as the author’s comments and a commemorative illustration.

The official staff has yet to disclose important information about the anime, including the release date, cast and staff, and other details. It is worth mentioning that Shun Umezawa’s highly acclaimed manga, The Darwin Incident, has been serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine since June 2020. As of now, seven volumes have already been released.

The Darwin Incident: From Manga to TV Anime

As previously stated, TOHO animation’s official X (previously known as Twitter) account announced via a tweet on Wednesday that mangaka Shun Umezawa’s The Darwin Incident manga has been approved for a television anime adaptation.

Furthermore, the highly-regarded anime studio also announced the launch of the new X account (@darwins_anime) dedicated to the anime, where they unveiled the teaser visual for the series.

The image showcases two main characters, Charlie, a human-chimpanzee hybrid, and Lucy, the secondary protagonist. Additionally, the illustration includes a Japanese catchphrase which translates to the following in English:

“Why are only humans are special?”

As mentioned before, the creators of the anime have not yet disclosed key information such as the release date, cast and staff, and other details.

Nevertheless, the official X account for the anime has released a commemorative visual and statements from the manga’s creator. The celebratory artwork shows Lucy taking a selfie with the “Humanzee,”Charlie, in front of their high school.

Shun Umezawa, the original author, has commented that the production staff and voice actors are fully dedicated to the anime project. He has also requested the audience to anticipate the anime with excitement.

On Tuesday, the X handle for TOHO animation had hinted that they would be revealing a new anime on Wednesday at 12 am JST, accompanied by a cryptic message. The studio later confirmed this by also announcing the anime adaptation of The Darwin Incident manga in the same post.

The plot of the Darwin Incident manga centers around Charlie, a unique character who is both human and chimpanzee.

Charlie, also known as a Humanzee due to his distinct qualities, began high school fifteen years after being raised by his adoptive human parents. It was here that he met Lucy, a bright but solitary girl, who would become his first friend.

Despite this, the town’s perception of Humanzee takes a turn when the Animal Liberation Alliance, known as ALA, devises a plan to draw Charlie into their rebellious actions. This event brings about a shift in attitude among the townspeople and others.
