Despite skepticism surrounding The Day Before’s viability prior to its launch, Fntastic’s survival/extraction shooter has indeed materialized as a playable game.
Unfortunately, it didn’t meet expectations (to say it was awful would be an understatement), even though it was the most wish-listed game on Steam leading up to its release at the end of 2023. Interest plummeted abruptly once gamers in the genre finally experienced this long-awaited title.
Just four days post-release, Valve removed The Day Before from its storefront, shortly after Fntastic announced that it “lacked the funds” to move forward.
Despite these setbacks, and the fact that the game’s servers are no longer operational, it still attracts an audience of precisely one player. No more, no less.
According to SteamDB, The Day Before, which once peaked at 38,104 concurrent players nine months ago, has drastically dwindled to just one. The reasons behind this decline remain unclear, prompting various theories among fans.
One lone player continues to engage with The Day Before.
“This guy is literally playing in a post-apocalyptic world with no other humans around,” one user humorously commented on a Reddit thread exploring the phenomenon, while another chimed in, “Pretty damn immersive; GOTY.”
“There are whispers it might be a modder attempting to revive the game,” another user speculated, though without any supporting evidence. Reviving a game heavily criticized for its quality would certainly be an audacious endeavor; stranger things have indeed happened.
“Did someone boot up the game and die in their chair from disappointment?” others pondered.
Should there truly be an individual navigating The Day Before, they are experiencing the ultimate fantasy of a genuine post-apocalyptic adventure. In contrast to Escape from Tarkov or The Last of Us, which abound with humans, this experience represents true survival, and yet, you’re not supposed to engage.
