The Director Stands by Controversial Scene in Deliverance Amidst Fan Backlash

Although you may have turned on The Deliverance to feel terrified, it’s actually an unexpected Glenn Close scene that has sparked conversation – and now the director is defending it.

This year, we have been presented with a number of terrifying horror films, such as the brutal scenes in In A Violent Nature and the subtle psychological horror of Longlegs. However, one genre that has been lacking is horror comedy… until now.

Despite its serious subject matter, Netflix’s latest film The Deliverance has surprisingly become one of the most comical horror films of 2024. This unexpected turn of events can be attributed to the events that unfold in the last 20 minutes of the movie. Based on the true story of Latoya Ammons, the film depicts her real-life experience with a haunting and the exorcism that was performed by a local reverend at her home.

In the film, Ebony’s (Audra Day) son Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins) is taken over by the spirits of the house and takes on the persona of Berta (Glenn Close) during the exorcism. As her eyes become glazed over, she shocks Reverend Bernice (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) by saying, “I can smell your nappy p*ssy.”

Despite leaving fans completely puzzled, director Lee Daniels has defended the decision for why she said it.

“One fan posted on X/Twitter, “Lee Daniels, you will be held accountable for your actions of having Glenn Close say this,”to which Daniels responded, “I had no choice.”

“Another fan chimed in, pointing out that she also received several good sniffs. A third fan added, “It’s undeniable that Glenn Close fully embodies her characters.”

Despite playing Bertha in The Deliverance, Close’s character is a stark contrast to the beloved actress we are familiar with. It’s not just this particular scene that has captivated viewers.

It’s hard to believe, but one fan tweeted, “I never imagined that I would witness Glenn Close doing a sew-in with French manicure tips, chewing gum like a cow, speaking with a Cajun accent, and doing the ‘girl straighten yo head up’ move.”

During the encounter, a fan exclaimed to Daniels, “Sir, you had the iconic Glenn Close wearing a 26-piece wig and doing a sew-in on the porch in the hood. The Secret Service should be involved at this point.”In response, Daniels quipped, “This tweet could easily be an advertisement.”

Close has been receiving praise for her role ever since the movie was released on the streaming service. However, in an exclusive interview with People Magazine, she admitted that she didn’t take the role lightly.

After [Daniels] informed me that such white women could be found in any Black community, I became curious and determined to portray them accurately,”she recounted. “And thus, my journey commenced.”

The Deliverance is currently streaming on Netflix.
