The latest episode of The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor, released on November 6, 2024, brought fans back to Prince Hadis’ homeland with the highly anticipated arrival of Prince Gerald. As the episode unfolded, viewers witnessed Jill once again turning down Gerald’s marriage proposal, despite his persistent advances.
However, the episode not only highlighted the escalating tension between the characters but also raised concerns about the show’s animation quality. Many fans noted a decline in animation standards, particularly concerning the character expressions, which have increasingly relied on pop-up images to convey emotions throughout the series.
Note: The following review contains potential spoilers for episode 5 of The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor and reflects the author’s personal views.
Episode 5 Review: Prince Gerald’s Schemes Unfold Amidst Tension
Titled When Seeking the Truth, Things Turned into an Argument, so I Can No Longer Do Anything, the episode opens with Prince Gerald making his way to Prince Hadis’ realm. While the kingdom prepares for Gerald’s visit, Jill’s apprehension grows—she is certainly not eager to see him again.
Upon Gerald’s arrival, Hadis and Jill attempt to present a united front. However, an awkward moment arises when Hadis tries to placate Jill with a kiss, only to be met with a slap. Upon meeting Gerald, Hadis honestly explains the bruise as a mere lovers’ quarrel. Jill, quick to intervene, insists that Gerald leave, asserting that Hadis needs her in the kingdom.
In a surprising twist, Gerald remains unfazed, claiming he only needs to take Jill away from Hadis. Shortly after, a soldier disrupts their meeting with news of Marquess Beil’s untimely demise in prison, further complicating the already tense situation. Jill grows suspicious of Gerald’s peculiar comments about Hadis.
The next day, whispers about a “curse”associated with the leadership circulate among the kingdom’s citizens, creating a climate of fear that they equate with Marquess Beil’s death. In an unexpected turn, Princess Sphere confronts Jill in her chamber exuding an ominous presence. In her vulnerability, Jill attempts to comfort Sphere, unaware of the dark force possessing the princess, which, quite unsettlingly, seeks Jill’s life.
As Hadis arrives just in time to prevent harm, he proposes drastic measures against Sphere, a suggestion Jill vehemently opposes, arguing that the real threat lies with the spirit controlling her. The episode concludes with rising chaos in the kingdom, as citizens demand Hadis’ head, fearing they may be cursed too.
Animation Quality Decline in Episode 5: A Closer Look
As the first season of The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor progresses, viewers have noted a noticeable drop in animation quality, particularly in this latest episode. The series, not considered a standout in the crowded Fall 2024 anime lineup, seems to lack the polish found in other productions.
Character emotion transitions still rely heavily on the repetitive use of pop-up images. While this method might not have been overly problematic initially, its excessive use in episode 5 raised further concern about the series’ artistic quality.
Moreover, action sequences in this episode lacked the finesse and coherence fans have come to expect, especially during Hadis’ confrontation with the kingdom’s soldiers. Despite these animation concerns, the narrative continues to captivate, promising exciting developments as the story unfolds.
