There’s not much time left before viewers return to the planet Arrakis – but how long is the Dune: Part Two movie?
Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious film is only a few days away from its release, and positive reviews are already pouring in for this new part. The adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel promises a great spectacle, as fans will be able to meet Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and new members of the five-star cast.
The appointment is set for February 28 in French theaters, which are already sold out for the first screenings in many cinemas. But how long will you have to stay in front of the big screen? We look back at the duration of Dune: Part Two, which we compared to the rest of the director’s filmography.
How long is Dune 2?
Dune: Part Two is 2 hours and 47 minutes long, for an impressive total of 167 minutes.
We understand better why director Denis Villeneuve preferred to divide Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 novel into two parts. Because the duration is roughly equivalent to that of the first part, which clocked 155 minutes.
Both films are longer than David Lynch’s 1984 proposal, which sought to condense the entire book into a single 137-minute film:
- Dune (1984) – 137 minutes
- Dune: Part One – 155 minutes
- Dune: Part Two – 167 minutes
For Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Second Part is also the longest work in his filmography to date, surpassing his previous major American productions. However, the filmmaker seems to have found his rhythm, and the fact of exceeding two hours no longer surprises much:
- Prisoners: 153 minutes
- Enemies: 90 minutes
- Sicario: 121 minutes
- Arrival: 126 minutes
- Blade Runner 2049: 163 minutes
- Dune: Part One: 155 minutes
- Dune: Part Two: 167 minutes
Despite its almost three hours, Dune 2 is not the only big production to prolong the pleasure, because a trend seems to be emerging among recent blockbusters. James Cameron also had fun releasing a (very) feature film with Avatar: The Way of Water, which lasted 192 minutes, or 3 hours and 12 minutes!
See you on February 28 in theaters to find Dune: Part Two.
