The End of the Texas Roadhouse Peanut-Throwing Tradition

A video of peanuts scattered on the floor by a Texas Roadhouse worker went viral, leading to a debate on the restaurant’s traditional practice.

Brianna, a popular TikToker with over 8 million views, recently shared a video of her and her coworkers’ intense clean-up session after closing up. The footage showed them sweeping up a large amount of peanut shells from the floor at the end of the night.

Since its opening in 1993, Texas Roadhouse has maintained the long-standing tradition of providing complimentary peanuts on every table for customers to enjoy with their meal, adding to the overall dining experience.

The majority of Texas Roadhouse restaurants no longer follow this custom, causing many of the commenters to feel nostalgic while watching the video.

“Unfortunately, none of the Roadhouses near me continue to do this anymore – it’s disappointing, as it just doesn’t feel the same.”

“One person fondly recalled, “I used to love this about Texas Roadhouse when I was a kid lol,”and another expressed sadness, saying, “I’m going to cry, I really miss the peanuts at Texas Roadhouse. Our location doesn’t have them.”

Despite this, some individuals were pleased that the majority of stores no longer offer peanuts due to concerns about allergies. One such person stated, “I have allergies and used to think this was an overreaction, but now I realize I could potentially have a severe reaction just by entering this store. LOL.”

“Another person with a peanut allergy expressed their joy at being able to dine at TR without the worry of peanut contamination. They also wished for more people to understand the significance of this experience.”

It has been discovered that this is a significant worry for numerous people, as the prevalence of peanut allergies has surged by 3.5 times in the last 20 years, according to research.

Despite the tradition of providing peanuts at Texas Roadhouse establishments, this practice has dwindled during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Roadhouse employees on Reddit, most locations now distribute pre-packaged peanuts to customers instead.

Several employees cited the reason for discontinuing the tradition as the tedious and laborious task of removing peanut shells. One employee stated, “Cleaning up is an absolute nightmare. We used to distribute two buckets – one for peanuts and the other for the discarded shells.”

Despite this, as shown in Brianna’s video, there are still restaurants that adhere to the tradition. In a subsequent video, she addressed a comment stating that Roadhouse no longer serves peanuts, and she proved otherwise by panning the camera over to multiple tables with peanuts, stating “we still do.”

According to Texas Roadhouse, the tradition of serving complimentary peanuts is still very much a part of their brand identity. As stated on their website, these peanuts are roasted and salted and are served to all customers in a paper bag. The restaurant also encourages customers to throw their peanut shells on the floor.

Texas Roadhouse’s brand identity is closely associated with their famous peanuts.

A different TikToker recently became popular at Texas Roadhouse after charging a $100 bill to their boyfriend’s credit card.
