The hit movie on Netflix, “Megan Leavey,”is based on the true story of a Marine veteran and her loyal dog. However, many are wondering what actually happened to Rex in real life.
Kate Mara plays Leavey in the movie, a woman who joined the Marine Corps in 2003. Following her enlistment, she successfully completed military school and was then assigned to the K-9 program, where she first met Rex.
During their deployment to Iraq, they were sent on two separate occasions and successfully completed missions in Fallujah and Ramadi. While leading an army patrol down a street, both Leavey and her German Shepherd were injured by an improvised explosive device, resulting in Leavey being awarded a Purple Heart.
With Megan Leavey almost reaching the top of the Netflix chart, it may have crossed people’s minds: what was the fate of Rex in real life?
Rex’s Current Status
Rex passed away on December 22, 2012 at the age of 11. By this time, he had retired and was happily living a peaceful life with Leavey.
Following their recovery from injuries sustained in Iraq, both Leavey and Rex were honorably discharged, but Rex decided to continue his service. However, four years later, he suffered from facial palsy, rendering him incapable of detecting bombs and carrying out his regular duties.
Despite Leavey’s initial request to adopt Rex being rejected, a public outcry and petition for the two to be reunited prompted Sen. Charles Schumer to intervene and successfully facilitate their living arrangement.
According to CBS News, he commended the Marines for allowing Rex to retire and be with Corporal Leavey, stating that it is only fitting and proper for the two of them to enjoy their retirement from service together.
Upon his return, Leavey expressed, “It had been four years since I last saw him. He’s now overjoyed to be back at my house. He has formed friendships with my other pets and everything is running seamlessly. I am extremely grateful and want to thank everyone involved.”
During his last months, Rex enjoyed swimming, socializing with other dogs, exploring the yard, chasing deer, and snuggling up next to his owner in a comfortable bed.
Following his passing, Leavey took to Facebook to share a heartfelt message. She expressed her gratitude for the 8 months she spent with her partner and best friend, stating that she remained by his side throughout and comforted him as he peacefully passed away.
Although he was already my guardian angel, I am forever grateful to everyone who supported me and allowed me to spend 8 precious months with my best friend. He was an incredible dog, a tough Marine, and a truly special soul. Thank you to all.
