Deadline reports that Seed of the Sacred Fig has captured the spotlight at Cannes, with the audience giving it a standing ovation of 15 minutes after its premiere. This remarkable reception is largely credited to director Mohammad Rasoulof, who is currently sought after by the Iranian government and is facing an 8-year prison sentence for his filmography.
For those who are into numbers, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, by Mohammad Rasoulof, was applauded for exactly 15 minutes (I counted personally). It only stopped because the director started talking into the microphone. It’s a film that attacks the Iranian patriarchy and celebrates women and freedom. #cannes pic.twitter.com/Dt5F8WG1zk

The novel Seed of the Sacred Fig follows the lives of a family residing in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. The protagonist, Iman (portrayed by Missagh Zareh), is a lawyer who is appointed as a judge in a political trial. Despite the lack of evidence for conviction, Iman is forced to sentence the accused to death. As this unfolds, his wife and two daughters become more estranged, as they actively participate in protests advocating for women’s rights in their country.
According to Variety, Seed of the Sacred Fig is a top contender for the prestigious Palme d’Or award this year. As the Jury President, Greta Gerwig is expected to favor a film that delves into the issue of women’s rights, which is a central theme in Mohammad Rasoulof’s newest project. The film has already garnered acclaim from critics worldwide, with Guardian writer Peter Bradshaw stating, “While not flawless, the bravery of the filmmaker and his team is unquestionable.”
Mohammad Rasoulof is a highly regarded director in Iranian cinema. His numerous works have been featured in international festivals and have received numerous prestigious awards. His projects often spark controversy as they are heavily influenced by the political and social climate of his homeland. He is a frequent presence at the Cannes Film Festival, where his film Goodbye (2011) earned him the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard category. In 2017, his film A Man of Integrity also received the top award in the same category at the festival.
