On October 25, Xports News unveiled the news that Jeon Soyeon, the renowned leader of the K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE, is set to depart from Cube Entertainment.
In her recent discussions regarding the renewal of her contract with Cube Entertainment, Soyeon was unable to come to a satisfactory agreement. As a result, she has chosen to leave her initial agency to embark on a new journey.
Soyeon’s journey began when she debuted as a solo artist in November 2017, followed by her debut with (G)I-DLE in May 2018. Not only does she lead and rap for the group, but she is also a prolific songwriter and music producer. She wears multiple hats in the creative process, encompassing lyric writing, song composition, arrangement, and even contributing to the group’s concept, narrative, and overall image. Her multifaceted contributions have significantly fueled (G)I-DLE’s rise in popularity while forging their unique identity in the industry.
In a July talk show, Soyeon disclosed that her hard work could lead to earnings of around 1 billion won in some months. This statement underscores her exceptional talent, influence, and the substantial responsibilities she carries as an integral member of (G)I-DLE.
In the aftermath of the school bullying allegations surrounding Soojin that surfaced in late February 2021, (G)I-DLE experienced what felt like a public “boycott.” Any mention of the group garnered intense backlash, leading both fans and the media to speculate that the girl group might face imminent disbandment.
Despite these challenges, (G)I-DLE made a triumphant return with their album *I Never Die*, featuring the hit single “TOMBOY,”which was penned by Soyeon herself. This track successfully reintegrated (G)I-DLE into the vibrant scene of 4th generation K-pop.
Riding the wave of this success, (G)I-DLE released another album titled *I Love*, which included the title track “NXDE.”This song further exemplified the group’s daring concepts alongside Soyeon’s innovative direction. Although the label initially hesitated due to the provocative nature of the title, Soyeon stood her ground, clearly articulating her vision during formal discussions with staff members.
Thanks to Soyeon’s artistic prowess, (G)I-DLE not only reclaimed their status but also gradually garnered back the affection of their audience.
However, the group may face new obstacles in the wake of Soyeon’s exit. Currently, the enthusiasm surrounding the remaining (G)I-DLE members appears to be diminishing.
Particularly, member Shuhua has frequently come under fire for her vocal abilities and has been involved in controversies due to performance errors. Additionally, (G)I-DLE has faced scrutiny for their provocative image.
Moreover, with only one Korean member left, Miyeon, the situation is further complicated, as she has yet to establish herself as a prominent figure among the new generation of idols. This poses a challenge for the group to maintain their connection with Korean fans.
This situation raises the question: Can the remaining members rise to the occasion and fill the gap left by Soyeon, or are they heading towards a disbandment?
