The Gentlemen: do you have to have seen the Guy Ritchie film before the Netflix series?

Guy Ritchie’s series on Netflix has the same title as a film by the director released in 2020: do you have to have seen the feature film before the eight episodes?

The aristocrats of the crime empire have finally set foot on Netflix. The story of gangsters with sharp accents promises its share of crazy adventures, embellished with a few spices and shootouts.

The eight-episode series focuses on the Horniman family, whose heads have passed around the title of dukes for generations, and who will find themselves at the heart of a tornado smelling strongly of weed. Eddie discovers in fact upon the death of his father that he will have to cooperate with unusual commercial partners, already well established on his land: the teams of Bobby Glass, emperor of drugs in England.

The Gentlemen is co-signed by Guy Ritchie, and the series was presented as set in the universe of a film of the same name by the director, released in 2020. Do you have to have seen the feature film to understand the story of Netflix production?

The series The Gentlemen is thus presented by Tudum, Netflix information site: “The Gentlemen offers the small screen audience a new aspect of the world initially created in Ritchie’s 2020 film of the same name. Although the characters in the series are completely different from those in the film, The Gentlemen will have the same bite.

In reality, the series is in no way a sequel, and can hardly be perceived as a spin-off. The Gentlemen takes up the universe of the film, but makes it a sort of remake: many of the characters have functions similar to those in the feature film, while being different. Netflix production is above all a way for Guy Ritchie to take more of his time. While obviously retaining the basic pitch which consists of showing how English aristocrats can participate in their own way in a criminal empire.

It is therefore not necessary to have seen the feature film to understand the series The Gentlemen Netflix, but the opposite is just as true. For those who are not yet familiar with it, watching the series will in no way disturb watching the film, which is in any case worth the detour.
