The Ghost in the Shell: Everything We Know About Science SARU’s New Anime

Just like before, there is another adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s renowned manga Ghost in the Shell. However, this time it is a fresh anime series created by a popular studio, and we have gathered all the current information.

Many fans are most familiar with Ghost in the Shell through the 1995 anime movie, directed by Mamoru Oshii. This iconic film, known for its mastery of cyberpunk and action, played a significant role in introducing the medium to a global audience and is still considered one of the greatest anime films of all time.

Despite the excellence of the movie, it did take some creative liberties with the source manga, just like the other installments we have received throughout the years.

Despite the possibility that this version of Ghost in the Shell may not be the most accurate to Masamune’s original work, the studios involved are still very exciting.

The Ghost in the Shell release window

The initial announcement from Science SARU revealed that the Ghost in the Shell anime will be released sometime in 2026.

This suggests that production is still in its early stages, providing the team with ample flexibility for release as the show could potentially debut at any point during the year.

Is there a teaser for The Ghost in the Shell?

The initial reveal of The Ghost in the Shell included a short teaser, featuring several pages of Masamune Shirow’s manga with added animations.

The photographs depict Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 in different scenarios, including the iconic moment where Motoko leaps from a tall building and activates her cloaking suit. This scene strongly suggests that the intention is to explore the alterations made in the 1995 film and its follow-ups.

Who is Producing The Ghost in the Shell?

The production of The Ghost in the Shell involves Science SARU, Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. However, specific individuals working on the project, such as the director and screenwriter, have not yet been announced.

Masaaki Yuasa, an accomplished anime director, co-founded Science SARU in order to potentially participate. With his skills as both a director and a visionary, he has primarily focused on creating feature-length works in recent years, and may choose to continue in that genre. However, this is all mere conjecture at present.

Is The Ghost in the Shell a Reboot?

It has been strongly suggested that the upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime will revamp the narrative by starting from the beginning and following the manga. The promotional image for the announcement features Major Motoko Kusanagi and a Fuchikoma, important components of the original manga.

The teaser also includes panels and pages from the manga, indicating that this will be a faithful adaptation that draws heavily from the original source material.

That is all the information we currently have on The Ghost in the Shell.
