The highly anticipated debut of Junji Ito’s classic horror, Uzumaki Anime, has been confirmed for September 2024. The official X accounts of Adult Swim and the anime also announced this exciting news on 26 July 2024. An eerie trailer for the project has been released, along with details of its streaming availability. Viewers can catch the series on Adult Swim and HBO Max starting the following day.

The manga was first serialized in Shogakukan’s weekly magazine, BigComic Spirits, from 1998 to 1999. Its adaptation into an anime was initially announced at the 2019 Crunchyroll Expo, but has since been delayed three times.

The unique animation in the official trailer of Uzumaki, released on Friday, has been generating a lot of buzz.

The PV had hinted at the supernatural ‘spiral’ curse that had taken hold of the fictional town of Kurouzu-Cho, causing an unending cycle of chaos and fear among its inhabitants. It was announced that the four-episode series will be a joint production between Production I.G USA and Adult Swim.

Plot of the Anime

Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito, a high school couple, are the main characters in Junji Ito’s horror masterpiece. The story takes place in the fictional town of Kurouzu-Cho, which becomes engulfed in a curse of paranormal swirls. This leads to a series of bizarre events, causing paranoia and physical changes among the townspeople.

Despite Kirie and Shuichi’s awareness of the curse, they are unable to find a cure and feel helpless. As their loved ones fall victim to the curse, they come to realize the true extent of its madness, leading to the loss of their sanity and lives. With the odds stacked against them, will Kirie and Shuichi ever discover a way to overcome the curse and survive?

The horror manga series, Uzumaki, written by Junji Itou, was originally published in the Big Comic Spirits manga from 1998 to 1999. Fans can look forward to an upcoming anime adaptation set to release in fall 2022.
