Crazy Horse Leaves a Stain on Lisa’s Reputation with Chinese Public
Lisa (BLACKPINK) was recently revealed as the new brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, a luxury fashion house. The 27-year-old singer had previously hinted at this role during her attendance at the brand’s Fall/Winter 2024 fashion show in Paris in March.
The news of Lisa’s performance at the Crazy Horse strip club sparked a lot of attention on Weibo, China’s largest social media platform. With over 240 million reads and 50,000 discussions, it quickly became a hot topic. However, her controversial performance has led to a negative response from many Chinese fans, causing them to lose their admiration for her.
Chinese audiences are of the belief that Lisa’s actions may negatively impact her potential in this market. During her tenure at YG, she was the sole member chosen for various shows and promotions in China. Numerous individuals have shared pictures of Lisa wearing revealing attire, performing at a strip club for five consecutive nights, posing with dancers, and referring to her new role as an ambassador as a “reward”for her strip club performance.
There are also sarcastic remarks insinuating that the Thai idol is using her alleged relationship with Frédéric Arnault to further her career, implying that her performances at strip clubs are simply a means to an end. Frédéric happens to be the son of billionaire Bernard Arnault, who owns LVMH, the largest luxury goods conglomerate in the world with 70 renowned fashion and cosmetics brands including Sephora, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Marc Jacobs, and Tiffany & Co.
There are some comments claiming that the fashion house’s decision to make Lisa its brand ambassador is causing it to lose value. In addition, there have been warnings to refrain from buying Louis Vuitton products in the future.
In spite of facing heavy backlash from the public, Lisa still went ahead and put on five shows at the renowned Crazy Horse strip club in Paris in late September 2023. Frédéric even brought along his family and friends to show their support for her.
Despite being the most active member of BLACKPINK in China, Lisa’s recent actions have caused a heated discussion. The Chinese market, which was already tense, has become even more so. In 2020, Lisa was asked to join the show “Youth With You 2″at a time when K-pop idols were facing restrictions in China. This opportunity brought her immense popularity in China, leading to multiple lucrative endorsements such as food, technology, and gaming.
Despite her efforts, Lisa has been met with criticism from the public who accuse her of being a public figure who has a negative influence on the thoughts and actions of young people. There are concerns that her actions may lead young girls to believe that exposing their bodies is something to be proud of, especially in a culture like China where striptease is considered obscene.
Lisa’s recent five-night performance at Crazy Horse in Paris, France has resulted in a decline in her popularity among the Chinese public and has also impacted her ability to engage in certain activities. Other artists who were present at her performance, including Angelababy and Zhang Jia Ni, have also faced repercussions and limitations in their career pursuits. For example, Angelababy encountered challenges in her return to the entertainment industry after remaining silent for several months.
In addition, Lisa’s Weibo account and the accounts of her fan group were suspended, resulting in luxury brands quietly removing related videos and images from their Weibo pages, as she was their spokesperson.
Nevertheless, Lisa continues to be a popular topic among Chinese internet users. Updates about the Thai beauty consistently rank high on entertainment hot searches, although the level of positivity has decreased compared to earlier. The latest speculation about Lisa being involved in a love triangle garnered 300 million views on Weibo.
Despite this, the Chinese authorities’ strong response to Lisa’s striptease performance has hindered her ability to re-enter this profitable market.
Lisa’s Impact Outside of the Chinese Market
Despite rejecting a personal contract with YG Entertainment, Lisa has continued to prioritize her individual endeavors and venture into different roles. In the beginning of this year, she launched LLOUD, a company aimed at showcasing her creative vision in the realm of music and entertainment.
RCA Records later announced a partnership with Lisa for the release of her recordings. This agreement grants her the ability to release new music as a solo artist under RCA Records, while still maintaining complete ownership of her work.
Despite being posted on a YouTube channel with a relatively small subscriber base of 3.5 million, the MV for “Rockstar”has already amassed over 124 million views since its release in late June. This impressive view count showcases the video’s widespread appeal and success.
The 27-year-old rapper’s first international solo stage appearance will be as a headliner at the Global Citizen Festival 2024 in September.
Despite the controversy surrounding her striptease performance, Lisa’s significant influence in the fashion industry was showcased when she quickly became a Louis Vuitton brand ambassador after leaving Celine. Her appeal to luxury brands remains strong.
Lisa’s success in music and fashion is now being complemented with her foray into acting. She recently announced her involvement in season three of the HBO series “The White Lotus.”
The film’s production started in February in Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok, Thailand. While the plot of the film, which will revolve around a group of tourists at the White Lotus resort, is being kept secret, information about the main character’s personality is being kept confidential.
Lately, Lisa has been making frequent trips to France, Thailand, and Japan for her personal endeavors. She has been open about her romantic relationship with her boyfriend, Frédéric Arnault, and they have been seen together at various public events.
In May, Lisa and Frédéric were present at the launch event for the partnership between Kith and Tag Heuer, which is the sponsor of the F1 Grand Prix 2024 in Miami, Florida. They were also given the honor of waving the checkered flags to signal the end of the race for the drivers at the F1 Miami Grand Prix 2024.
Even though Lisa has lost the Chinese market, she continues to actively search for potential markets in Southeast Asia and is concentrating on opportunities in the United States.
