With the streaming release date for The Instigators approaching, many are curious about what Apple TV+ has planned for the film, which follows Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as they go on the run.
Despite the abundance of action movies in Hollywood, the heist-gone-wrong plot has been extensively explored. However, with the casting of Matt Damon as the lead and a director known for creating intense action scenes, this film has the potential to be a success.
Damon and Affleck have previously worked together on multiple successful films, including Ocean’s Eleven, Oppenheimer, and Good Will Hunting. Despite the fact that Affleck’s life-long friend missed out on this opportunity, their upcoming project, The Instigators, is bound to be another successful collaboration.
Is there a release date?
The Instigators will be released in theaters for a limited time starting on August 2, 2024.
The film will be released on August 9, 2024 on the Apple TV+ streaming service. As an Apple Original Film, it is not surprising that it is being fast-tracked onto the platform.
In 2022, Apple acquired the film and filming commenced in March 2023. At present, it appears that the movie will only be released in theaters in the US.

Rory and Cobby will be portrayed by Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in the movie.
Collectively, the two portray a duo of criminals who flee from the scene of a failed heist. Alongside them, a plethora of well-known celebrities such as Hong Chau (known for roles in Downsizing and The Whale), Paul Walter Hauser (from I, Tonya and the upcoming Fantastic Four film), and Ving Rhames (famous for Pulp Fiction and Mission: Impossible) join the cast.

What is the plot of the movie?
The Instigators follows the story of an unexpected duo – a struggling father and a former convict – who join forces to steal from a dishonest politician.
Despite their best efforts, the situation quickly takes a turn for the worse and they are forced to flee together. In an attempt to resolve their issues, they bring along Rory’s therapist on their journey.
The official summary goes like this: “Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck), an unlikely duo, must team up as a father in need and an ex-convict in order to steal back the corrupt politician’s illegally obtained fortune.”
However, when the heist takes a turn for the worse, the two are thrown into a chaotic whirlwind, being chased not only by law enforcement but also by corrupt officials and vengeful underworld figures.
Feeling completely overwhelmed, they manage to convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join them on their chaotic escapade through the city. Despite their conflicting personalities, they must band together and strategize in order to avoid being caught — or facing even graver consequences.

It seems that this film is both a buddy comedy and a high-stakes heist. And as expected, there is some product placement for Dunkin’ Donuts, as the story takes place in Boston. While Rory is trying to straighten out his life, Cobby seems to have no interest in doing things by the book.
There are car chases, helicopters, and explosions – not too shabby for Apple TV+!
