Recent events have stirred public conversations about cults, particularly following reports that highlighted the actions of a woman who fled the Christian Gospel Mission, commonly referred to as JMS. This individual was sued for distributing illicit footage in an effort to persuade a friend regarding the religious group’s practices, which include allegations of sexual crimes against followers.

Kang Ji-sub’s Controversial Post
On March 13, 2023, actor Kang Ji-sub raised eyebrows by posting on his personal channel, saying, “Why did I even keep this in storage when I should have thrown it away a long time ago?”This message accompanied a photo showing him discarding a painting of Jesus, provoking speculation about his potential involvement with JMS.
Just a day earlier, Kang expressed his concerns stating, “I hope that there will never be another victim. I attended JMS during a challenging period, solely to pray.”He indicated that he departed from JMS five years ago in 2018. Despite his clarification, backlash ensued, prompting him to delete his personal account.

The Response from Kyoungyoon
Kyoungyoon, a former member of the musical group DKZ, also made headlines when allegations surfaced that his parents’ café was being used for JMS recruitment activities. In a revealing interview with Dispatch on March 13, 2023, Kyoungyoon shared his personal experience with JMS, stating, “My parents attended JMS for over 20 years, and I was born into it.”He further mentioned that watching the documentary “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal” led him to realize the extreme nature of JMS’s leader, who claimed, “I am the Messiah.”
With evident emotion, he expressed regret, saying, “I wish I could turn back time.”He affirmed his decision to formally distance himself from JMS, although this incident ultimately led to his departure from DKZ.
The Impact of Netflix’s Documentary
The controversy surrounding JMS gained renewed attention in March 2023, coinciding with the release of the Netflix documentary series “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal.” This eight-episode series shed light on the leaders of four different religious cults, including JMS and Baby Garden (Agadongsan), prompting broader discussions about cult dynamics and their impact on individuals.
