The Last of Us series gets top HBO directors for season 2

HBO’s hottest directors have just signed on to join Season 2 of the highly acclaimed video game adaptation The Last of Us.

HBO has ramped up production on the second season of The Last of Us in recent months. Pre-production is almost complete and filming is expected to begin in February 2024.

Plus, the show’s most controversial role – the character of Abigail “Abby” Anderson – has finally found a taker. Hunted star Kaitlyn Dever landed the role in January 2024.

Now, HBO has added four new directors to The Last of Us team for season 2… and its most renowned creator is among the group.

The Last of Us Season 2 Welcomes Best Director From HBO’s Succession

According to Deadline, Mark Mylod from the series Succession is now part of the quartet of new directors for season 2 of The Last of Us. The participation of the English filmmaker is a great asset for the series, given its recent successes.

“Mark Mylod (Succession) will direct episodes of The Last of Us Season 2. / Nina Lopez-Corrado (Perry Mason), Stephen Williams (Watchmen), Kate Herron (Loki) and Peter Hoar (The Last of Us Episode 3) will direct also episodes.”

Mark Mylod won three Emmy Awards for Succession (one for directing and two for producing). Far from being content with that, he has also received widespread praise for his work on other HBO series, including Game of Thrones, Entourage and Shameless.

The new recruit of season 2 of The Last of Us also appears in the credits of several films. Among these, the most notable are Ali G and Le Menu.

The other newcomers to The Last of Us are also doing very well in the industry: we will have to count on Nina Lopez-Corrado and Stephen Williams, from the Perry Mason and Watchmen series, as well as Kate Herron whose work was noticed on Sex Education and Loki.

As for the previous showrunners, they will still be present: Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann will continue their work in the same vein as season 1, and will direct certain episodes of season 2.

Peter Hoar, also present from the start, will be back. He notably directed the moving episode about Bill and Frank, “Longtemps…” (or “Long, Long, Time” in the original version).

Is The Last of Us spin-off centered on Bill and Frank in the works?

Episode 3 of season 1 was very popular with spectators, despite – or thanks to – its standalone aspect. This is why, when actor Nick Offerman (Bill) revealed his desire to see the story lead to a spin-off of the couple, fans followed.

Nick Offerman added that he would be happy if a project centered around Bill and Frank (Murray Bartlett) took a different approach, even joking that he would be willing to sign on for a musical. “We have no shortage of ideas,” he joked.

Unfortunately, HBO’s priority at the moment seems to be season 2 of The Last of Us, and there is no indication that any spin-offs are in the works.
