While traveling from Lindon to Eregion, they discover that Sauron’s influence has obliterated the bridge over a chasm. Camnir suggests alternative routes, but Galadriel expresses concerns about dangers in the hills.

Galadriel contests Elrond’s proposed plan, fearing it is a trap. Elrond insists they take the southern route, warning her of dire consequences if she heeds the ring’s call. Despite this, she defies him as they set forth.

Nori and Poppy awaken in a desert and encounter Nobody, also known as Merimac. They convince him to take them to his village, where they meet Gund, the village leader.

This village is set within a bowl-shaped crevice in stone walls, which unsettles the Harfoots. Gund, or Gundabale, corrects them by stating they are Stoors, not Harfoots or Hobbits. Although initially displeased with Merimac for bringing them, she allows the Harfoots to share their story. Nori explains they are on a mission to assist a giant friend in finding his destiny.

Until Nori discloses that the Stranger is a wizard, there are no alarm bells ringing, as the concept of a giant is relative to their small size. Unfortunately, Ciaran Hinds’ Dark Wizard, who fits the archetype of Saruman, is the only wizard nearby. Upon hearing this, Gundabale swiftly orders the binding of the girls.

Tom Bombadil, the hermit farmer, uniquely manages to locate the Istar by persuading his tree to release it. Although Tom appears early on in Frodo’s quest in The Lord of the Rings, he was notably absent from Peter Jackson’s films. Kinnear’s depiction brings a whimsical and comedic flair to the show.

During their encounter, Tom inquires about the stars. The Stranger shares his longing to find companionship beneath them. Tom whimsically transforms the Stranger’s star sketch into bread, humorously claiming he might be the friend the Stranger seeks.

The Stranger also approaches Tom Bombadil for guidance, having witnessed his effortless control over nature. Tom responds that true learning only occurs when one is ready, indicating that the Stranger is not yet prepared.

As distant horse sounds signal the end of their chat, the Stranger realizes Tom is an intended meeting. Tom reveals he has known the Dark Wizard before he conquered Rhûn and suggests that the latter is collaborating with Sauron for greater power that threatens to annihilate Middle-earth.

When traveling to Eregion, the group arrives at Tyrn Gorthad, an ancient burial ground. Elrond and Vorohil hear a haunting melody and discover a message for Celebrimbor and Gil-galad’s messengers. Soon after, Barrow-wights, the ghostly beings haunting the graves, emerge and drag Daemor away.

The search for Theo continues near Pelargir after his abduction during a foray into the wildmen’s camp with Isildur. Despite Theo’s reluctance to speak to Arondir about his experiences, Arondir feels compelled to assist in the search. He realizes that the deserted camp holds significant implications.

As they dig deeper, Arondir reassures Isildur that Theo has likely survived, seeing Isildur punishing himself for his role in the incident. When a sound draws Arondir’s attention, he is horrified to discover the decimated body of one of their comrades.

Meanwhile, Gundabale warns Nori and Poppy that the village elders may cast them out by dawn. They trivialize this, suggesting they would do the same if Sadoc were leading.

Gundabale is surprised when Nori mentions Sadoc Burrows, leading her to show Nori an ancient mural and recount a Stoor tale of dreams about a place like Hobbiton. She reveals that Rorimas Burrows set out to discover this place, leaving a message for others to join him, but none did.

In response, Nori tells Gundabale that Rorimas never found the location he sought, and the Harfoots continued wandering. The looming threat of the Dark Wizard’s scouts promises further troubles for Nori and Poppy, as Gundabale denies knowledge of any Harfoots, leading the scouts to depart, but not without indication that this is not their last encounter.

The Elves detect the approach of Orc drums, presumably the same group that Arondir is tracking. The Orcs inadvertently reveal their location when one causes an injury while attempting to kill a horse.
