The combined success of Deadpool and Wolverine’s opening weekend is set to propel the MCU past a box office record that is highly unlikely to ever be surpassed.
In 2012, it was evident that Marvel Cinematic Universe films would have a significant impact on the box office. The Avengers proved to be a massive success, ranking as the third highest-grossing movie of all time, the most successful superhero movie to date, and Disney’s top-grossing film.
For the next seven years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued its extraordinary run, starting with the highly successful Guardians of the Galaxy. This film introduced a brand-new team from a niche comic and went on to make over $700 million at the box office.
Just before Endgame, Captain Marvel managed to surpass the $1 billion mark, which only adds to the disappointment of The Marvels’ overall low earnings. It is expected to soon hit an impressive milestone.
Deadpool & Wolverine to Boost MCU Box Office to $30 Billion
Following the opening weekend of Deadpool and Wolverine, the total box office for the MCU is expected to surpass $30 billion globally.
The current total stands at $29.7 billion from 33 movies, with projections of $360 million for this weekend alone from the releases of Deadpool and Wolverine.
To provide perspective on the absurdity of that amount, consider the James Bond franchise. With 25 films, as well as 1967’s Casino Royale and Sean Connery’s Never Say Never Again, the franchise has accumulated a total gross of $7.8 billion.
What about Pixar? With a span of almost 30 years and 28 films, from Toy Story to Inside Out 2, the studio’s movies have collectively earned nearly $17 billion.
Despite this achievement, the MCU still has a ways to go before it can compete with other multimedia franchises, despite becoming the largest movie series in history.
For instance, the total estimated revenue for Pokemon is $88 billion, which encompasses earnings from various sources such as movies, games, and merchandise. Similarly, the Harry Potter franchise has generated a total of $9.5 billion from its films alone, but this is just a fraction of its overall empire, which is estimated to have earned nearly $35 billion.
