Recently, on August 27, Koreaboo released a report stating that Real Research Korea, a popular app among South Korean citizens, conducted a survey to gather data on public opinion towards celebrities involved in scandals and who are no longer desired in the entertainment industry.
With the option for participants to vote for multiple names, the survey garnered a total of 3,507 votes. As a result, the system identified the five most disliked former celebrities in South Korea at present.
Seungri (former Big Bang member) and solo singer Go Young Wook tied for first place, each receiving 66.4% of the votes.
Despite being one of K-pop’s most successful idols, Seungri’s involvement in the Burning Sun scandal has led to him being labeled a “national outcast.”This scandal has been deemed one of the most shocking and significant in the entertainment industry by South Korean media. As the owner of the Burning Sun nightclub in Seoul, South Korea, the youngest member of Big Bang has been linked to various sexual crimes that took place in 2019.
Seungri’s sentencing in May 2022 sparked outrage as it was considered too lenient for someone facing 9 charges, including sexual assault. He was ultimately given a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months.
Despite being released, Seungri remained embroiled in controversy due to his lavish lifestyle, frequent partying, and lack of remorse for his previous behaviors.
Despite being less well-known than Seungri, Go Young Wook still faced serious charges and was convicted of sexually assaulting three minors from 2010 to 2012. In 2013, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison after being exposed. Additionally, as part of his punishment, the man born in 1976 was required to wear an ankle monitor for 3 years after his release and maintain a publicly accessible sex offender record for 5 years.
Despite his attempts to return to social media in 2020, Go was unable to do so due to Instagram’s policy against sex offenders. He subsequently launched a YouTube channel in July, but it faced immediate backlash from netizens and was shut down.
Steve Yoo (also known as Yoo Seung Jun), a solo artist who rose to fame in the 1990s and early 2000s, is next on the list. However, with 55.8% of voters rejecting him, his fall from grace may have been caused by different reasons compared to the top two celebrities, but it is still significant.
