The most underrated Devil in Black Clover is also the most successful one (& the plot proves it)

The Black Clover manga initially placed a strong emphasis on magic, with a slight focus on devils due to Asta’s possession of a five-leaf grimoire. However, this shifted with the introduction of Zagred in the Elf Reincarnation Arc. Prior to this arc, fans had only caught glimpses of Liebe within Asta’s mind. Zagred’s arrival provided fans with a more detailed and thorough understanding of the devil.

Despite being a high-ranking devil, Zagred was often underestimated by fans, especially when compared to the likes of Lucifero, Beelzebub, and Megicula – all of whom held the highest-ranking positions among the devil hierarchy. However, unlike these other devils, Zagred was the only one who managed to achieve success in his mission.

The anime exposed Zagred as the mastermind responsible for the creation of Licht’s five-leaf clover grimoire, the genocide of the Elf Tribe, and the rebirth of the elves.

Zagred’s desire was to journey to the surface world in his original form, which required him to inhabit the body of someone with a five-leaf grimoire. To achieve this, he plotted the annihilation of the elf tribe by possessing a minister from the Clover Kingdom. Through this, he was able to lay a trap, preventing Prince Lumiere Silvamillion Clover from attending Licht and Tetia’s wedding.

Meanwhile, Zagred employed a magical device to absorb the Elves’ magic, mimicking Lumiere’s Light Magic to attack them. The devastation of witnessing the annihilation of the Elf Tribe prompted Licht’s four-leaf grimoire to transform into a five-leaf grimoire. Despite Zagred’s attempt to possess Licht’s body, he was unable to overcome Licht’s unwavering determination to protect his body.

Following Lumiere’s victory over Demon Licht, Zagred attempted to take possession of Licht’s five-leaf grimoire but was ultimately sealed away by Secre Swallowtail.

Thankfully, Zagred was able to delay his plan for the future by orchestrating Patry’s resurrection. Additionally, he was able to escape his eternal prison during this time.

During the Elf Reincarnation Arc, Zagred utilized the bodies of multiple reincarnated elves to obtain Yuno’s magic stone and place it on the pedestal. This allowed him to summon his original body from the underworld, ultimately achieving the plan that had been put on hold for five centuries.

Despite Zagred’s defeat against the Magic Knights and elves, it is important to remember that no other highest-ranking devil has been able to accomplish what he did, making his success significant.

In contrast to Zagred, the top devils were only able to reach the surface world with the assistance of the Dark Triad members. Without Dante, Vanica, and Zenon, devils Lucifero and Megicula would not have been able to reach the surface world. They had no strategy like Zagred and were completely dependent on the Dark Triad to accomplish their goal.

In terms of Zagred, he posed a significant threat. Despite not possessing a human host, he still exerted influence on the events in the Clover Kingdom through his ethereal existence. Even when his first plan was foiled by Licht, Lumiere, and Secre, he wasted no time in devising a new plan, even after a five-century wait. This only serves to demonstrate how underestimated Zagred was as the primary antagonist in Black Clover.
