<p>The launch of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape in June has been met with much praise, yet it also brought to light a troublesome aspect with its Exotic Class Items. Originally introduced in the first Destiny, these items have undergone significant transformations in the sequel, now serving a pivotal role within the Light and Dark-infused Prismatic subclass.
From a design perspective, the implementation of Exotic Class Items is groundbreaking. They enable players to customize their Guardians by mixing and matching two different Exotic armor perks across all three Vanguard classes, with the unique feature of allowing cross-class compatibility for certain perks.
Exotic Class Items now appear in Xur’s inventory as an alternative means of acquisition.
This level of customization fosters a unique build crafting experience, with numerous viable combinations worth exploring. However, this introduces a dilemma. As a looter shooter, Destiny 2 encourages players to pursue rare loot, seeking that exhilarating rush when they finally obtain a coveted drop.
Unlike Exotic weapons, which acquire through deterministic methods, no firearm in Destiny 2 is so essential that a player feels incomplete without it. Exotic Class Items, however, were designed to occupy this crucial role for players embracing the Prismatic subclass. Yet, users must rely heavily on their hidden luck stat to achieve the ideal roll, compounded by the question of where they are supposed to store their numerous viable rolls.
Addressing the Issue
In response to player discontent concerning the Exotic Class Item acquisition process following The Final Shape release, Bungie has made efforts to alleviate the challenges. Recently introducing these items into the rotating inventory of Xur, the time-limited vendor, serves as a temporary fix while the developer works on dedicated Attunement systems aimed at reducing RNG frustrations and enhancing availability through in-game events.
Attunement was introduced to improve accessibility, but it hasn’t solved the core storage issue.
While these adjustments have made Exotic Class Items less rare, they haven’t resolved the fundamental problem of limited storage. With over 60 combinations available per class and an astounding total exceeding 180 possible configurations, avid players juggling three characters find the 600 slots in their Vault painfully insufficient.
Seeking a Long-term Solution
Many players have proposed solutions to Bungie, with the predominant suggestion advocating for the integration of Exotic Class Items into the crafting system introduced with The Witch Queen. This recurring idea echoes throughout various forums, including the extensive Destiny subreddit community.
One forum member famously stated, “If only we had a system where, once unlocked, we could create new versions of an item with the perks of our choosing,” in a discussion lamenting the cumbersome task of managing storage for “20+ class items per class.”
Others have suggested that Bungie consider adding each combination to the Collections screen after initial acquisition, thus allowing players to access their preferred configurations more conveniently.
While the current frustrations regarding storage are somewhat manageable, Bungie should be mindful of the growing concerns. If left unaddressed, the situation could escalate, especially as potential updates and additions to Exotic Class Item perk pools could further strain the already limited storage.
