The world was collapsing around him, both in spirit and in flesh, as tremors shook the ground, a direct consequence of the Soul King’s tragic end.

With this critical entity lost, the very structures that bound the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the Human World teetered on a precipice. Shaking reverberated across dimensions, triggering widespread hysteria. This led to a crucial inquiry: who would assume the monumental responsibility? The resolution to this question does not arise directly from the anime but unfolds in Ryogo Narita’s light novel series, Can’t Fear Your Own World, delving into the aftermath of the Thousand-Year Blood War. The outcome was as grim and convoluted as the conflict itself.
Yhwach Ascends as the New Soul King
In an unexpected twist, Yhwach—the architect of the Soul King’s downfall—emerged as the new Soul King. Even after his defeat, Yhwach’s body—imbued with the essence of both the Soul King and Mimihagi—was utilized by the Soul Society as a means of staving off the disintegration of the realms.
But why Yhwach? In the climactic moments of the Thousand-Year Blood War, Yhwach compelled Ichigo to slay the Soul King. In a desperate last stand to salvage what remained, Jushiro Ukitake sacrificed his own life in a ritual known as Kamikake. His essence was absorbed by the right arm of the Soul King—Mimihagi—temporarily stabilizing the realms. Yet soon after, Yhwach assimilated both Mimihagi and the Soul King, melding their powers with his own.
Despite Ichigo eventually cutting Yhwach down, putting an end to his reign, the world remained in a precarious state. With the crucial cornerstone of the realms lost, the Soul Society had no alternative but to utilize Yhwach’s body—a vessel now intertwined with the Soul King’s essence—to stabilize their existence. Ironically, the individual whose ambitions were to obliterate everything became the critical element in preventing total devastation.
Why Wasn’t Ichigo Chosen?
The lingering question was—why not appoint Ichigo, the hero who had repeatedly rescued the world, as the new Soul King? The answer is revealed in Can’t Fear Your Own World. Ichibe Hyosube, the mysterious Manako Osho, had indeed contemplated nominating Ichigo as the next Soul King, serving as a contingency should circumstances worsen. He was prepared to take drastic measures to safeguard the realms, even if it meant betraying the very hero who had just saved them.
Nonetheless, with Yhwach’s remnants present, Ichigo was relieved from this dire fate. Had Yhwach not been available, Ichigo might have been obligated to become the next pivotal figure, trapped in a role far beyond anyone’s grasp.

Though this solution was far from ideal, the necessity to use Yhwach’s body to replace the Soul King was the only viable way to avert universal collapse. This cruel twist of fate served as a poignant conclusion for the Quincy King, whose aspirations to reshape existence ultimately relegated him to a mere instrument for preservation.
