Diablo 4 is sparking excitement among its community with speculation regarding potential new character classes. Recent revelations suggest that early artwork may provide insights into the game’s forthcoming additions, particularly regarding the next hero players might encounter.
With the release of Diablo 4’s inaugural expansion, which introduced the Spiritborn—a modern interpretation of the familiar Witch Doctor class—players are eager to discover what’s next. Anticipation is building for another expansion, rumored to be released in late 2025, prompting conversations about which class might join the fray.
Historically, Blizzard has shown flexibility in how they introduce new classes. For instance, Diablo Immortal has incorporated new classes in updates independent of major expansions. Alternatively, reminiscent of Diablo 3, there’s always the possibility of a dedicated downloadable content pack, such as the popular Rise of the Necromancer.
Inspired by sacred devotion, characters like the Paladin and its iteration, the Crusader, wield divine power to vanquish evil.
Could the Crusader Be the Next Class in Diablo 4?
The artwork referenced earlier showcases several Diablo 4 classes engaging in battle against demons. Notably, within this illustration stands a previously unseen figure: a Holy Warrior, armed with a shield and spear, positioned prominently in the center.
The identity of this character, whether a Paladin, a Crusader, or a new variant of the Holy Warrior archetype, remains unclear. Nonetheless, the presence of this figure raises questions about Blizzard’s previous intentions regarding the inclusion of this class.
The recently launched Vessel of Hatred expansion, which revisits the Nahantu region, brought with it a revitalized version of the Witch Doctor class to reflect contemporary gameplay dynamics. This creative makeover was necessitated by the established Necromancer and Druid summoner roles, compelling Blizzard to innovate—to create a fresh take on familiar character classes.
This leads to speculation: Could similar transformations occur for Holy Warrior classes? Despite both the Paladin and Crusader typically being depicted with shields, the introduction of a spear indicates a potential reimagining, paving the way for a new character design that evolves the classic Crusader concept.
YouTuber Osterberg501 highlighted this theory, noting that this artwork originally appeared as part of an official Diablo 4 Displate, which Blizzard subsequently withdrew from circulation. This maneuver might suggest a change in Blizzard’s strategy regarding the class or indicate an intention to unveil the character at a later date.
Integrating a new Holy Warrior class could also harmonize with the overarching narrative of Diablo 4, especially given the rising significance of the Cathedral of Light within the storyline. Following the defeat of an extremist faction in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, the emergence of a new Holy Warrior dedicated to restoring the church’s honor seems a fitting development.
As the narrative unfolds, it appears inevitable that a Holy Warrior class will make its debut in Diablo 4. This artwork may serve as an early hint regarding the appearance of this exciting new character.
