We recently witnessed the introduction of the NVIDIA RTX 4070. With third-generation ray tracing cores, fourth-generation Tensor cores, and the new Ada Lovelace architecture, this is a fantastic mid-range GPU. The RTX 3070 Ti, on the other side, was made available by NVIDIA in June 2021. The graphics card is now approximately two years old. Both were released for about the same price, however only one bears the “Ti” emblem.
Should you pick the more recent RTX 4070 or the less expensive RTX 3070 Ti model? Which NVIDIA GPU is the best for you under $500? In this essay, we’ll aim to clear up all of this confusion.
NVIDIA RTX 4070 vs. RTX 3070 Ti: Comparison of specifications, functionality, and cost
Specs comparison:
The following table compares the specifications of the NVIDIA RTX 4070 and RTX 3070 Ti:
GPUs | RTX 4070 | RTX 3070 Ti |
Architecture | Ada Lovelace | Ampere |
CUDA cores | 5888 | 6144 |
CUDA capability | 8.9 | 8.6 |
RT cores | 3rd gen | 2nd gen |
Tensor cores | 4th gen | 3rd gen |
Base clock | 1.92 GHz | 1.58 GHz |
GDDR6X VRAM | 12 GB | 8 GB |
Memory interface width | 192-bit | 256-bit |
NVIDIA Encoder (NVENC) | 8th gen | 7th gen |
Max temperature | 194° F | 199.4° F |
Max TDP | 200 | 290 |
It is clear from the table above how RTX 4070 and 3070Ti differ from one another. First, the 3070 Ti is a member of NVIDIA’s third-generation Ampere series, while the 4070 is a member of the company’s fourth-generation Ada Lovelace series. The two GPUs actually belong to separate generations, which increases the disparity in their specifications.
The 3070 Ti has more CUDA cores than the 4070 because it is a “Ti”badged GPU. Yet the Ray-Tracing and Tensor cores in the RTX 4070, which are one generation more sophisticated than those in the RTX 3070 Ti, give it the upper hand. It also features a faster base clock of 1.92 GHz. The 4070 triumphs once more in the VRAM category thanks to its larger 12 GB GDDR6X memory.
It’s impressive to see that, in comparison to the previous three generations, NVIDIA has been able to reduce the power consumption of their ray-tracing GPUs. The 4070 is therefore set to its 200 watt maximum. The 3070 Ti, on the other hand, has a maximum TDP of 290 watts, which is more than the 4070 Ti (285 watts).
Performance comparison:
Although both GPUs are capable of 4K, their intended use is for 1440p gaming. Both GPUs can effectively handle ray tracing at 1440p resolution. Performance-wise, the NVIDIA RTX 4070 outperforms the RTX 3070 Ti by around 20%.
Its ray tracing speed is also more stable because to the most recent 3rd generation ray tracing cores. A 30 to 15 FPS disparity between the two GPUs is what gamers may anticipate.
Price Comparison:
Although the RTX 3070 Ti graphics card is two years old, its cost has not decreased significantly. Both GPUs are now available for about $599. The main difference between the NVIDIA RTX 4070 and the RTX 3070 Ti is price. On the other side, market analysts anticipate a sizable price reduction for the NVIDIA RTX 4070. Prices for the 4070 could soon drop much lower than those for the 3070 Ti.
Which should you choose?
Last but not least, the NVIDIA RTX 4070 is the obvious victor of the two GPUs in terms of price per frame. Keep in mind that secondhand RTX 3070 Ti can be had for some reasonable prices as well. But, the RTX 4070 is the best choice if you have a $600 budget and want a recent GPU that can run contemporary AAA games at 1440p extreme settings with ray tracing enabled.
