The One Piece is a complete reboot
The One Piece starts with the East Blue Saga, the initial saga from the manga in which Luffy crosses paths with the Straw Hats. This is a contemporary retelling of the tale, rooted in the concepts of present-day anime.
This updated rendition of One Piece will feature a closer resemblance to popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen or Blue Lock, implementing modern techniques and standards. A significant alteration is the switch to a 16:9 aspect ratio from the very first episode, as opposed to the original One Piece anime’s initial 204 episodes which were in 4:3.
Eiichiro Oda urged the team to add their own unique touch to his renowned creation. During One Piece Day 2024, he was quoted saying, “Instead of simply recreating the manga of One Piece, the anime team should interpret and revamp it in their own distinct manner.”
Netflix’s One Piece anime isn’t replacing the original
Despite the longevity of the original One Piece anime, which has aired over 1100 episodes, Netflix’s reboot is not altering its success. Rather, it serves as a convenient entry point for both new and returning fans who may have missed earlier story arcs after joining the franchise more recently.
Currently, both Netflix and Toei’s versions will coexist. They are not in competition as they each tell distinct narratives. The original series is approaching the Final Saga, while this adaptation still has hundreds of episodes left to cover before reaching that point.

One Piece Day 2024 showcased a significant amount of concept art, providing a powerful sneak peek into The One Piece. The concept art features vividly-colored, daring illustrations of iconic scenes from the early chapters of the manga.
